Here’s a picture you might appreciate. It’s sad that Crow Bar recently stopped offering their Friday fish fry.

Thanks for the tip on Taco Mex, and especially for mentioning the carne en su jugo. I’ll be sure to give theirs a try one of these days. Do you know anything about Chapala (3537 E 106th), almost across the street from where Tacos del Pacifico was? Seems to draw a fair crowd but I never got around to visiting because of TdP and Pupuseria El Salvador within a block of it.

Another chicken place around there is Gina’s (3415 E 106th). I wouldn’t say it’s worth driving across the city for but I was reasonably impressed on my single visit.

Do you know if Loncar’s is still open? Are we talking about the place on 92nd a couple blocks east of Commercial, or is there another? I thought Loncar’s closed but I could definitely be wrong.

I’ve only been to the “new” Hienie’s at 10359 S Torrence. Very good fried chicken and okay fried fish. Across the street from Leif’s Diner. Here’s a year-old picture of the old Hienie’s on Commercial around 84th, not far from the original location of Club 81.

Any word on whether the owners are opening another place elsewhere? I was ecstatic to hear of this place a few weeks ago, but so so sad to find out they closed. Does anyone keep tabs on the owners?

    HI,

Believe me when TdP finally re-opens this will be probably the first place in town you will hear about it.

The owners were not only moving their business, they were also selling their home and moving as well. So they had a lot to do in the last seven weeks since they closed. At their closing, they still had made no final decisions where they were relocating their business or their home.

Just the other day I was talking to people who are opening Sam's liquors in Highland Park. They wanted to open in November, they are now opening in March. A much better financed operation than TdP, their problem was getting the approvals from the city of Highland Park.

All you can do is wait like the rest of us.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Fer chrissake...for all the love and attention this closed restaurant gets, we should take up a collection for the owners and beg them to re-open. Seriously. Who's with me? I still haven't calmed the deep craving for a fish taco with anything I've found, although Shaw's is the closest so far. They don't fry it, but the tuna they use is obviously the top notch tidbits from the entrees they serve.

I agree. On the way home to South Bend from the last meal I had there, I told my wife if I won the Powerball drawing that night I wanted to make sure they stayed open. :)

    HI,

Today I was in the vicinity of TdP, so I stopped by to see the new establishment: El Patrnn Grill Mexican Restaurant

Nothng out of the oridinary Mexican.

    El Patron Grill Mexican Restaurant
    3544E 10th St.
    Chicago, IL 60617

I might have had a pupusa, but on Sunday they open at 2:30 PM. Two hours seemed a bit long to hang around.

Nothing out of the ordinary Mexican.

Did you eat anything or just look at the menu? The menu is mostly pretty standard but the prices are quite low (e.g., $1.45 for a taco de chile relleno) and there are a couple things you don’t see everywhere. They serve a torta ahogada, neither the worst nor best in Chicago, but a bargain at $3.25. This is close to the classic version served in Guadalajara with only carnitas, red onion (not pickled in this case), and a garnish of chopped cabbage. The whole thing is “drowned” in a pool of medium hot salsa made from chiles de arbol. I’d be more enthusiastic if the bread had been different. They used a very soft bolillo instead of the denser, saltier birote that should properly be used for this sandwich (see this great old post by RST). I mentioned this to Hector, the very friendly and helpful owner, who acknowledged it wasn’t quite right and told me he was looking for another local bakery. Hector also offered a piece of advice on etiquette that I’d been wondering about since my first pambazo. A knife and fork usually accompany these incredibly messy sandwiches but I always wondered how they do it in Guadalajara. I did as Hector advised: “Just pick it up . . . and kill it.”

    HI,

When I arrived to El Patron, I had just eaten fried oysters and mushrooms at Calumet Fisheries. I was hoping to finally have a pupusa at the place across the street, but I was at least 2 hours from opening time.

I did read the menu there though I didn't catch the Torta Ahogada. I did catch the Fried Ice Cream and Fried Cheesecake. What I was hoping for was 'imitation is the highest form of flattery' where the new occupants borrowed ideas from the prior occupant. A wee chance they might have had fish tacos et al. A chance which didn't pan out.

Tried to remember where the Orthodox church was located. Instead we drove over to Pullman.

I had the unfortunate bad luck of joining this site a week before Pacifica closed. I went there 3 days after they closed!!!!!!! :( I am dying to try these taco's. Who-ever is in touch with them ask them if we can hire them for a night to make us those tacos... I will be glad to host the event at my house!

I will not be happy until I have tried those damn fish tacos!!!!!

For those keeping track, El Patron has closed after barely half a year in business.

I apologize if anyone’s hopes were raised with the resurfacing of this old thread. I know nothing new about Tacos del Pacifico. Before they closed I gave them all my contact information (as I’m sure others did too) but haven’t heard anything.

I was going to post this on the Shopping & Cooking board, but since this thread popped up and since it was TdP that inspired us to pursue deep fried fish tacos I've posted it here. I can post the recipe if anyone wants it, but I'll have to get it from my wife and she's not around right now.

Cruelty! Thy name is LTH. I saw this thread in the list of re-surfaced topics, and my stomach actually gurgled at the thought that TdP had re-opened and I would, at last, taste what has been so lovingly described here. And the same to you crrush! You brought up this thread again! I sit here in Pittsburgh and my heart jumps with this thread.
I know from my last few times at TdP that the Romeros were going to explore options (over Dec 2005, Jan 2006) - but mentioned they'd go back to Mexico if nothing panned out. They had a whole list of LTHers numbers, including mine. Since I nor anyone else has heard from them - I hope somewhere in Mexico some town is blessed with their food and they are doing very well.

As for TdP and Chicago, moderators, please, pretty please lock this thread.

Sad this place has not resurfaced anywhere! Anyone know any places in chicagoland that offer something similar to the former Tacos del Pacifico? I love Big and Littles but their seafood taco's are not exactly authentic baja style, although they are very tasty.

There have been several restaurants at this location since Tacos del Pacifico closed (cf, El Patron, above). About a month ago I stopped at Papi Real Taco, the latest one. I'd noticed tacos de pescado on the menu (plus the "hechos a mano…" sign in the window). They were out of fish. Probably just as well as I doubt the tacos would have measured up (but you have to keep trying, right?). What other places have people tried, seeking a replacement for Tacos del Pacifico?
