Jan and I went to Canton Regio in Pilson for the first time, but it definitely won't be the last.

While I had heard it was a Mexican steakhouse, they have much more than steak on the menu. We didn't really try much on the menu however, both ordering a entrée only.

Jan's dish was the shrimp skewers, which are three skewers of shrimp, onion, and tomato. It's a pretty impressive "plating", as you'll see from the photo below. Everything was cooked very well, although there are cloves of garlic used as spacers on each skewer and they're not fully cooked.

I had the skirt steak, which is served with grilled knob onions, grilled jalapeno peppers, and grilled cactus leaves. The steak was excellent, as were the other items on the plate.

I really like the ambiance of the restaurant, and the people there were super friendly. They're BYOB, which is a great plus for me. They don't have any wine glasses, so you have to bring those too.

Overall, a really nice place that I'll definitely return to.

I went there for lunch last week. It might be the best $8 steak deal in the whole wide world

Meal was Carne Asada, plus cheese fried on the flat top with bean/rice and tortillas. I also had an excellent Horchata. The whole restaurant steps up everything. I did not try the skewers, but they looked good. You can also buy meat by the half kilo. In a city full of good to great Mexican Restaurants, this place can hold its head high.

If you ever find yourself wondering "Man, I wish Nuevo Leon was still open, but better," this is the place for you.

Horrible if it was true but just curious if there was ever anything other than allegations?

The victim filed a police report, according to the Tribune — no small matter for him, as he is an undocumented worker — but I can find no further update since 8/23.

Last year, Daniel Gutierrez Jr. faced similar allegations from another employee but claimed he was acting in self-defense. This time, he said he was provoked.

Do these assholes prey on undocumented workers, knowing they will be hesitant to go to the Police?

Yeah I saw this. I used to be a patron of Nuevo Leon, but had no interest in Regio's offerings. These two incidents make me glad that I at least haven't given him any money in a long time.

I'm bummed. I quite liked the food at Canton Regio, but don't think I can go back in good conscience after hearing about what sounds like a pattern (provoked or not, I'd expect someone who had faced a situation like this before to find a way to walk away) and not an alleged/isolated incident.
