In a pinch for a quick pick up lunch, we decided to give the recently opened 65 Poke/Sushi spot a try. We are big fans of Aloha and were bitterly disappointed by Firefin, which 65 took over at 174 N Franklin. Expectations were rather low but Yelp (yeah, I know...) reviews gave us a glimmer of hope.

All in all, it was definitely worth another try. I did the sushi 'burrito' which is basically a build your own roll. They have a few preconceived ideas or just pile on what you like. Fish (and other ingredients) were fresh and tasty. The bowls I saw were packed full and the burrito was sufficiently sized for most lunchtime appetites.

A solid rendition that will be missed by me.

Wishbone on Washington (don't know about the Lincoln Ave. location) serves that type of Chicken (country) fried steak, when they have it as a special. I think it used to be Wednesdays, but I moved my office away from there over 10 years ago, so things might have changed. Call ahead for CFS special day.

The owners of Wishbone, the West Loop restaurant that earlier this year announced it was moving after 26 years, has found a new space. Co-owner Julie Nickson said they’re targeting an early fall move to the former Bin 36 space at 161 N. Jefferson Street.

The CTA has a press release dated June 13, 2018 announcing that Wishbone is moving to the ground floor of their headquarters at 567 W. Lake.

Those who use the Clinton station on the Green/Pink Line or the Metra Ogilvie Transportation Center will be able to enjoy unique southern dishes with a Cajun spin at Wishbone restaurant. A long-time favorite originally located in the West Loop, Wishbone will move into the ground level of CTA Headquarters located at 567 W. Lake this summer with an anticipated fall opening. The new restaurant will occupy more than 5,500 square feet and operate five days a week, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Wishbone will also have exclusive use of the outdoor dining area adjoining the space.

In case anyone's wondering about a possible discrepancy in addresses between the two previous posts - 161 N. Jefferson and 567 W. Lake - Google Maps says they're two different addresses for the same building.

The Churro Waffle, which opened Monday at 2845 W. Irving Park Rd., will focus on breakfast and lunch fare.

Looks worthy of a try in the Irving Park neighborhood. Fill the void of Danny's Egghead closure.

I truly don't understand the logic of the location of this place. It's a stone's throw away from:
    Once Upon A Bagel
    1888 1st St.

If the new place is 1/2 as good as New York bagel and Bialy on Dempster, it will be better than Once upon a bagel and will get some of my business.

Apparently this is a Marcus Lemonis enterprise. That might explain why it's opening in the same spot that had one of his clothes shops that recently closed. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertain ... l#nws=true

Temporary banner sign up at 2604 Lawrence for Sweet Pepper Venezuelan Food Bar. Arepas, plantains, bowls and salads. The window papering is down. Layout seems sort of fast foody with a modest amount of seating on plastic chairs and tables. More seating than Nhu Lan has three doors west, though.

Yelp has a review dated June 17, supposedly the day after grand opening. Google shows three reviews, one of which is identical to the Yelp review. I wonder if any of these are by disinterested parties. Google shows hours as 11 AM to 9 PM. It did not look truly open a bit before 4 PM today; chairs were upside down.

[updated]We have it on good authority (the proprietor's) that there is a South African barbecue place, Baobab BBQ, opening in the long-shuttered Dorado space on Foster at Oakley in Lincoln Square. My husband talked to him today when we saw him puttering around the building. He said he's aiming to open by the end of July and will have dinner and weekend brunch. Menu is listed on their website.

I don't know what "South African barbecue" means, but if it's any good, we'll be there often, given that we live about 100 feet away. I can't tell you how super, super, super stoked I am for *something* to go in that space. The building's owner (Otto Barone, for those of you familiar with this very outgoing Bowmanville/LS resident) has made endless promises of opening a breakfast/brunch/whatever spot without delivering, and we gaze at the building sadly on a regular basis.

I would expect a great restaurant to be attuned to the details of all aspects of the business. A creative and talented chef who does not pay attention to all the details of the business or is not working with someone who does, will not have a business very long.

True dat. Your website is often the first impression anyone gets of your restaurant. If your website sucks or is difficult to navigate then it will put off customers. A truly great (I mean really great) restaurant might be able to get away with a poor site, but anyone else needs to make their best effort.

Cathy2, you asked at lunch today about the opening date for the Whole Foods being built at 60 and Milwaukee in Vernon Hills. On the way home, I saw that banners are up now saying it will open in October. No new news on the Aldi's opening across the street, but I will post as soon as I see some clue.

By the way, as mentioned at lunch and if others are curious, there will be a City Barbecue and Kuma's Corner in that Whole Foods complex as well.

The Italian place that's soon to open (July) in the cursed former Jimmy's Charhouse site at Ogden and Rte 59 is Vai. It's a new concept from the owners of Fire + Wine in Glen Ellyn.

And now open very close by in the old Carrabba's site at that same corner is Al-Quds Restaurant, serving shawerma, falafel, seafood, as well as breakfast -- although they don't open until 11:00. website

Gave that a try today - did the Piggie Smalls chicken bowl. It will definitely be in the rotation. The early crowds are gathering at Piggies, Furious Spoon, Dos Toros and Fare. Next week will be a scouting mission to try some of the others.

Also, La Cocina will be opening their new outpost on Lake St (next to Monk's Pub) next week. Good to have them back in range.
