The for lease sign for the space next to Red Hot Ranch has been there for many months. That vacant space has made for easier parking.

Sad but good news for the Kitchen Sink, a coffee shop in Edgewater. It has been sold. I'm sad because Jeff and Erin have been with the shop for several years and it has been an important anchor on Berwyn just east of the L stop. The positive news is that is now part of the growing Baker Miller family. Dave Miller was working the register this morning. Their baked goods are now available in the shop. They will be modifying the menu to keep the top selling Kitchen Sink items and adding Baker Miller items.

Noticed a "For Rent" sign in the window of the recently opened Pops Beef location at 157 W. North Ave. earlier today , walked over to verify and found the doors locked with a "Do Not Trespass" sticker on them.

Talked with a couple of the staff today and it sounded like they didn't know this was happening. They seemed a little anxious, understandably.

That's not cool. Same thing happened to me, I learned of my employer being sold on the news Monday morning.

Che F!gata has just opened at the Arista Hotel in Naperville (Rte 59 & I-88). It replaces Sugartoad? Wood-fired oven smelled good....

Buttermilk, a breakfast/lunch place has opened on Freedom Drive in Naperville. They have a location in Geneva, too. There's also a Sharko's BBQ there -- not sure how long it's been open.

Chuy's, a Tex-Mex place has opened at Cantera in Warrenville. I would say it's good Tex-Mex. I like the flautas. After having lived in Dallas for a couple of years, sometimes you just have a Tex-Mex itch, and this scratches it....

The haunted Jimmy's CharHouse/City Island/Timber Lodge/Boston Blackie's location at Rte 59 & Rte 34 has notes in its windows -- coming soon -- Italian inspired dining. I guess I was driving too fast to get the name.

Surprised to see this has escaped notice.
Central Gyros on Central has been temporarily closed since Feb. 28th. A fire next door is the reason although I couldn’t see much evidence of one looking through the windows yesterday.
Updates are being posted on their FB page.

I love Breakfast House but that does seem a hard location to bring in traffic without a parking lot or significant available street parking.

Coming soon to downtown Highland Park:
    Corey's NYC Bagel Deli
    1883 2nd St.

I truly don't understand the logic of the location of this place. It's a stone's throw away from:
    Once Upon A Bagel
    1888 1st St.

I wonder if this will be a duel like what we witnessed between Sunset Foods and Byerly's. Once Upon A Bagel can play up the long time commitment to the community.

Sunset Foods had one advantage: anyone who grew up in Highland Park knows at least a few Cortesi family members. Going to Byerly's was like being disloyal to your friend's family.

I do like the chive cream cheese and a few other deli items at OUAB but their bagels are so bad, I sincerely hope that Corey's (whoever the eff they are), can give them a run for their money. There have been instances, especially at busier times, when those ouab bagels have been no denser than hamburger buns.

I like Freddy's. The burgers to me are Steak N Shake clones in taste (which I love), the thin fries (no big deal) and they have custard like Culvers but the big plus is the Fry Sauce which makes the fries more enjoyable and I'll put this sauce on the burger too. I see they are also going to build one in Frankfort and one in Homewood soon. Hope they open up north by me.
