Introduced by McDonald's in 1981, and available only intermittently, the McRib has inspired plenty of rumors about its origins. Some say it was offered as an alternative to Chicken McNuggets during a chicken shortage. Others claim that its sale is intimately linked to the market value of pork, and that it only goes on the menu when the pork market is down. Whatever the true story, the McRib has achieved a cultlike following for the fast food giant, even spawning online locators to let you know when the sandwich will be available in your area. It's made by pressing chopped pork, seasoned with salt and sugar, into a rib-shaped mold; cooking it; coating it with a sweet and sticky barbecue sauce; and shoving it into a sandwich with pickles and onions.

Sitting in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport last week, I needed something fast, so I figured, what the hell...I got a McRib, my first. Recognizing that it's a kind of joke sandwich, I was ready for the worst, but you know, it was pretty much okay. The fake bones in the pressed meat are weird, and the bun was more smashed down than fluffy (as it appears in the ads, though that's no surprise: ad photos of food always look about 3X as good as the actual thing). But it was okay. I don't feel like I need to eat a McRib again, but now I've tried one, and I've eaten much, much worse.

I'd be preparing to answer the door. McDonald's is probably hunting you down to be their next new ad exec...

Have to admit, I had one the other day. I succumbed to a combination of advertising, nostalgia, and memories of a certain episode of The Simpsons as I choked down my first McRib in 30 years or more. Wasn't good, wasn't bad. Just a waste of time and calories.

I am pleased to report that there are still some things you can count on. The McFib I had today had the same flavorless, poorly textured "meat" covered in borderline unpleasantly sweet sauce as always.

I went to my friendly neighborhood McDonalds and grabbed the combo, with America's Favorite fries (by sales), plus an extra McRib for just a dollar more, and I think the total was $7.42 but they didn't give me any ketchup packets.

I'd hardly call factual information fake. It is, in fact, the first, concerted nationwide roll-out of this item since 2012. There are several reasons one might find this information newsworthy, many of which go beyond whether or not one is able to order this item on a regular basis.

It has been semi-regularly available in Chicago for years. When you contemplate that McDonald's had Michael Jordan pimping this sandwich twenty-five years ago, but it still did not catch on, makes one wonder if this is the corporation's Don Quijote mission.
As for me; there are other items I will slum with at McDonald's (I had two Sausage McMuffin with Egg sandwiches on Saturday.), but I will not order this. Even if it gets reassigned to the 'value' menu.
