At the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center

    October 22, 2023 - April 14, 2024

More than a place to get a meal, the Jewish deli is a community forged in food. “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli explores how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, imported and adapted traditions to create a uniquely American restaurant. The exhibition reveals how Jewish delicatessens became a cornerstone of American food culture, and how delis served as a lifeline for many Holocaust Survivors and refugees who came to the United States.

Get a taste of deli history through neon signs, menus, advertisements, uniforms, photographs, and film and TV clips. Plus, spark and share your own deli memories with fun photo ops and interactives!

Anyone know if/what progress has been made on The Bagel re-opening at Old Orchard? It would be great if there was a Jewish deli in such close proximity to visit after going to the exhibit. Maybe Mensch's will be open in Evanston before the exhibit leaves.

I'm fairly certain that it's not going to be next to Maggiano's where Corner Bakery was located. I was at Maggiano's yesterday for a family party. The construction that's there is for a new entrance to the restaurant.

Coincidentally, I'll be in Old Orchard tomorrow. I'll check near the former site to see if there's anything going on.

There's also Kaufman's, although it's to-go only. They might have a couple small tables there?

They have a few tables outside during the warmer months.

We're in the final weeks of the exhibit and I'm planning my visit...what delis have people been going to lately? Haven't heard an update from Mensch's in awhile.

I went to the holocaust museum on the last Friday of February which is free admission, though of course I gave a donation, and more importantly once upon a bagel in the suburbs sells sandwiches there in a little lunch room on each of the last Fridays of the exhibit. Sy Ginsberg corned beef and pastrami were OK but the rosen Rye bread was too soft. but it was fun to be able to eat after seeing the show. I know this doesn't answer your question....
