The LTHNLG is deviating from the norm and switching to dinner for April. The recent LTH "discussion" about Burt's - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=43096&start=120 - got me thinking that a visit is due.

Please join us on the 28th for pizza and lively discussion. As always, bring a friend.

I go back a long way with Burt's, and Burt. Gulliver's, Il Forno. Then at Pequod in Morton Grove, a joint that us Skokie-ite high school kids revered because you could sneak beer in there, it was probably about 1974 that Burt threw us out after my friend Ira took his shoes off and wouldn't put them back on. He promptly kicked our butts out the door, and then threw Ira's shoes out after us. A very young Buddy Roadhouse was Burt's waiter about that time and would hold his nose when serving an anchovy pizza.

Then a few years later, Burt & Sharon are my neighbors. Sharon & my wife worked together. Their then-teenage daughters babysat for our girls. I was an eyewitness to the split from Pequod, the opening of Starback (as it was then called) and the non-compete with Pequod for a number of years. I taste-tested his sausage, the source of which he guarded like Fort Knox.

But he finally prevailed, changed the name to Burt's, slowly built up a clientele, then the Saveur article hit, and boom--instant stardom, which I think Burt simultaneously craved & detested.

And here we are, with the legacy. The website looks pretty nice, and I'm excited to finally be able to try Burt's 2.0. Count me in!

This looks like a challenge to me. ;)
Considering I went to a {gasp} Yelp assemblage at Pequod's, and unsuccessfully tried to convey my dad [R.I.P.] to Burt's (going so far as to make a reservation on a day when we would return from one of his doctor appointments at big Res on W. Talcott Ave.){BuddyRoadhouse can confirm.}, before Burt died; unless this is the 4th Friday of the month (when I have a Central Electric Railfans' Assocation monthly meeting), I need to be at this.

Also count me in for this event, as well. I've FOREVER wanted to go to Burt's, but still hadn't made it there sadly. Would be nice to finally visit here, even if it is after Burt passed away.

Good you'll be there, pudgym29. I remember going to that same Yelp meetup like you at the nearby Pequod's to eat, years ago myself. :)

I would love to join you (although I have had the 'New! and Improved!" <sic> Burt's but I am out of the area in the evenings and on the weekends (also going camping that weekend).

With the recent discussion and Pequod’s Pizza getting ranked the best pan pizza in the Chicago area (Burt's was #3 with no mention of him passing) by Timeout I think a taste test is in order.

Since they are a block apart, order one from each for the same pickup time, head to a nearby park and once in for all, hash it out.

I'm scheduled for a different LTH event at the same time, but curious if North has ever considered Rivaj of India, which is IIRC the only other place I've seen ranked above Aroma besides 7 Spices. With the discussion of comparing pizza places above, perhaps we should compare indian buffets?

Ah, well, the same offer holds for some other potential pizza face off, if at lunch time.

Has LTH north ever gone to Salsa 17? I stopped in for a quick taste (and to ask some questions), and liked two of their four mole sauces which they let me taste, as well the soup that I tried..

We love that place. My wife especially. It's her go to for upscale Mexican. Really good food and nice seating - it's it's nice out I recommend the alley seating.

Do we still need to pre order?
What shall we order? My favorites are sossidge, mushrooms and spinach, Sue's are pepperoni, bacon and green olives (what I call the salt lick)

I'm more than happy to preorder if the rest of the group can come to a consensus here. Happy to share with Joel.

I would like to come but have been watching snow storm predictions. If we get a lot of snow in the Libertyville / Gurnee area late Saturday and our snow removal contractor is not too efficient, as has happened in the past, I may have to cancel.

As to pre ordering, the last time I attended an Evanston Lunch Group gathering at Pequod's, where a similar pizza is served, the group favorite seemed to be sausage and peppers. That would be my vote.

I may be in the same boat, or rather, snowdrift, as Eddie. With concurrent knee, elbow, and back injuries (I spend a lot of time hobbling around the house like Captain Ahab, wishing there was some white whale I could blame all this on), if we get hit by snow Saturday night, I am not confident about how quickly I will be able to shovel my way out. I'll wait to see how the weather pans out and make a call by midday Sunday.

I hope to make it, though, and I'm all for preordering if it makes things easier (vs making more work for our EC or anyone else), and I'm happy to eat any combo of things other people like. My personal favorites are pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms, but I'm up for anything others want to try.
