Well, I must say the raccoon was really something. It tasted like a cross between corned beef and lamb, and it was so tender! I got the spine! And the drinks were cheap - $2.50 for a whiskey sour, albeit with Squirt instead of lemon juice, but whatever. The meal was quite good but I didn't stick around for dessert; the crowd was so big and the seating arrangement so tight that I was getting freaked out. Plus the car decided to clunk on the last leg of my trip. I think that was our last road trip, but it was a tasty one. And Woodman's, oh, now I see what all the fuss is about. My God, look at all that cheese!

It was nice to meat you, Mike G, and where were you, Cathy2?

    Hi,

I appears we arrived just after you left.

Prior to our arrival, I was in Milwaukee having lunch at Jake's, bought some chocolate at Northern Chocolate, visited Usinger's to buy sausage seconds and checked out The Spice House's Milwaukee location.

If my gps didn't send us around the block a few too many times, we very likely would have been there in time to see you.

We also stopped by Woodman's to pick up a few things for the second day in a row. On Friday night, I had a pizza at Zaffiro's.

Need to go back to Milwaukee soon simply to carve out some new places to eat. At least for a while, some favorites have been revisited and my desire sated.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Hi,

I'm bringing my cooler for stops at Usingers on the way there. Maybe some ice cream on the way back will make its way in there. As for 'coon, most definitely bringing some home for feasting another day.

Good times, great company, and quite tasty little critters those coons are.
Furthermore, I got a chance to meet a few more LThers.
Always a very friendly and welcoming bunch.

Coon, hash, and eggs would make a killer breakfast.

I have not gone in a few years.

This week's segment of the Lake County History Symposium, there is a presentation on wild game dinners in Deerfield. It was highlighted raccoon's collected from the area were on the menu.

Back in the early 90s, my Mom saw information about this (or at least something similar offered in Deerfield). She ordered tickets and went to collect them. When it was learned it was for Mom and her daughter, but not her husband and a buddy, they would not sell her the tickets. We have forever wondered if this wild game dinner was a stag night.

I am looking forward to the presentation AND the coon dinner in Delafield.

They contract trappers for their meat. When speaking to them, they trim all fat from the animal then marinate for a week prior to roasting. Just a heads up, you get bones and all. They were worried that they wouldn't have it this year because coon pelts have dropped in price since the biggest market for them was Russia. The trappers came through and 96 years speaks for itself. Hope you enjoy.

    HI,

I helped make the dinner a few years ago. If you check out the video up thread, you will find yours truly helping out.

My very first introduction to raccoon was in the early 90s. It was Mr. and Mrs. Coon roasted to almost carbon. I ate it only to satisfy my curiosity and tick it off my life list.

    Hope to see you there!
