Girl scouts improved on their palm oil problem but never actually stopped using unsustainable palm oil. At best, their contract bakeries simply started mixing some sustainable palm oil with some from unsustainable sources. There are two different companies that make Girl Scout Cookies: ABC Bakers/Interbake Foods and Little Brown Bakers. Per the Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping App, which I highly recommend, Interbake is listed as Needs Improvement, which is the lowest rating for member organizations. That's actually better than Little Brown Bakers, which doesn't participate at all.

Recent news has revealed that the problem with Girl Scout cookies and other users of palm oil is actually a whole lot more disturbing than the destruction of orangutan habitats: child labor, rape and even slavery. This AP has been all over this. If interested, you can read more here and here.

The Girl Scouts of the USA said today it is partnering with Grubhub to ensure that you can still get the sweet treats you look forward this time of year.

But it doesn't. I bought mine online and credit went to my favorite niece.

Last batch I tried tasted like they used motor oil. Shockingly bad cookies from what they were even a few years ago.

Why try to drag down a good thing? My granddaughter is 7 and is involved with Girl Scouts and sells said cookies. I always buy stuff from kids (i.e. popcorn, pizza, etc....) and most are not always that appetizing, but I do it for them. Why put your paltry two cents into bashing these type of things. I don't get why that is important to you.

Is it no longer okay to express our opinions about food here? These are relatively low-grade goods that contain at least one really questionable ingredient. On top of that, they don't even taste close to as good as they once did. I see no reason why discussion of this should be out of bounds.

No one in my house wanted to eat them and I didn't feel good about bringing them to the food pantry, either. So, back when my nieces were selling them, I'd always give them some money and tell them to donate or keep the cookies (or the popcorn or what have you). There's nothing preventing any of us from supporting the causes we believe are worthy without getting something in return for it.

My policy on Boy Scout popcorn and Girl Scout cookies has been consistent. I do not buy them. In the case of the cookies, the individual troop gets very little. What I will do for the local scout troops is to write a check to that troop, 100% of which goes to them.

Or in the case of Boy Scout troops, I fund Eagle Scout projects.

I bought just shy of a case of my beloved Trefoils and 1 box of the Lemon cookie to give a try.

This is a nostalgia item. It is a lot like an Oreo or a Twinkie or a Chip Ahoy. No one thinks the National Brands are OMG delicious. But many grew up with them and have a fond spot for them.

The reason to order from a Girl Scout isn't based on the money going to the troop but you are introducing kids to the concept of meeting/greeting the public/adults. It's the first foray for many to learn to make a positive impression on those they don't know. In other words, it is the junior entrepreneur class before Junior Achievement (JA) for many. And way before selling World's Finest Chocolate for a school project or yelling at someone to wash their car. There are additional skill sets being developed with the cookie sales.

I ordered online from my Scout. They give an option of free shipping or having your Scout deliver. I asked the parent what her preference was. She wants her daughter to make the delivery.
