I learned today that as of 1/2/2021 Costco will no longer cash the Executive Member's refund "checks". They can only be used for membership payment or store purchases.

That I don't know, and didn't even think to ask. Mea culpa.

They did stop letting you get cash back from your debit card, when using it for payment. Sigh.

We are on a two week Costco Niles cycle and yesterday was slightly weird. 8:30am not one single car in line for gas, zero, nada, none. I thought it might be closed, nope, just eerily vacant of customers. Oftentimes there are 5-6 cars lined up at each pump, and there are a lot of pumps.

Costco Niles store right at 9am for old folks hour, three people in line to get in, often times there are 20-30 people. Store was well stocked, lots of everything including beef. Packs of prime or choice rib-eye/strip steaks, $7.99 choice $15.99 prime. I sorted though the choice and bought 4 huge well marbled choice strips for just under $40. Cooked two, froze two. One for dinner split, was very good, the other cooked for lunch sandwiches and salad the next day. Hard to beat the value ratio, especially if one takes the time to separate wheat from chaff.

Costco Niles, count me a fan!

Hey Joel. I asked and was told that you could buy a bag of candy and get the rest of the money back as change. So you just have to buy something with the refund check to get the rest back as change.

i dont buy costco rotisserie chickens. i'd rather pay a little more and not support the cruel business of factory farmed chickens. the NYTimes reports about an undercover investigation into costco's chickens.

Whole Foods rotisserie chicken is supposed to be all free range, and Jewel has some rotisserie chicken that is more expensive that is supposed to be free range. I have had Whole Foods rotisserie chicken before, and I think it is good, but I think the Chicago Tribune gave it low marks.

the whole foods rotisserie chickens in my experience have been overcooked and dry at both the lincoln park store and the ashland store, but it's been years since i was willing to take a chance on one. i have bought the higher priced ones at jewel, but they rarely have them.

Has anyone tried the Costco brownies? I'm told they are talked about quite a bit on FB. I bought some. Not bad, but nothing to go all fanboy/girl over to my tastes. More of a fudge type brownie. I think they need ice cream, vanilla, to go with them.

Rao's is on "coupon" at Costco through 4/4/2021. $2.60 off the two pack. Don't know what that makes the price in the Chicago area, but that is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, as my dad used to say.

Rao's Marinara was still on sale here in Oregon.

Also, the spiral cut hams were $7 off each ham, no limit. Not sure if that was just the Salem Oregon Store or not.

Finally, noticed they have a 38 qt. Stainless Steel stock pot, with the thick aluminum base for only $65. If my math is correct, that is a 9.5 gallon stock pot.

I really didn't like the brownies that everyone is making a big deal about, but the raspberry crumble cookies are quite good, IMHO.

My MIL handled the entire Easter dinner except for a salad I threw together because I’m about to start a kitchen reno and most everything is packed up. She bought one of those hams and it was just awful—we barely ate any of it. Off flavored sweetness, bitter crust, spongy texture. Yuck. Won’t be doing that again.

I've had one like that, but only one. The last ham I got was quite good. Better than any I'd had in quite awhile. I'll be trying this one tomorrow.

    Hi,

At the Mettawa Costco, they no longer offer Daisy sour cream. Instead, they now have Fage sour cream.

I opened the Fage carton just as I was finishing the Daisy, the great difference is texture with Daisy smoother with more liquid and the Fage thicker and relatively dry.

I had made a sauerkraut ham soup, which was too salty. I added sour cream to smooth it out a bit. The creamy daisy was a lot easier to stir into the soup than the Fage.

If you were making a chip dip, you may need to add some liquid to make the Fage more loose.

My family's favored cheesecake has a layer of sour cream on top. Usually it is sour cream with sugar and vanilla mixed in. I can envision adding some cream or milk to thin it out just a tad bit more. Out of the container, it is too thick to spread easily.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Cathy,

Even with Daisy, for some dishes, I add a little water to some Daisy in a bowl and lightly beat with a fork. Gives a wonderful consistency.

Bannockburn store has A5 wagyu strip steaks in the freezer for $99/lb, which is actually a decent price. Pretty amazing looking. Picked some up (they are packed in pairs for a total weight of 1.5-2 pounds, so a pretty serious commitment) for a birthday celebration.
