I saw cherries at the Fresh Market today for $6.99 a pound, and then I went down the street to the Jewel in Skokie on Skokie Boulevard, and I did not see any cherries there, and I asked, and I was told they were out of them. I bet you there is a shortage of western cherries this year, and I will end up getting local cherries at the farmer's market for the same price. Jewel does not have cherries listed in their ad starting tomorrow.

BTW- While I was at the Skokie Jewel today, I looked at their frozen section, to see if I could find any deals on healthy frozen dinners, and I ended up getting some frozen Indian dinners that were on clearance for $2.99, but I noticed that their Healthy Choice frozen dinners that were $2.99 six months ago, and were frequently put on sale for $2, were then raised to $3.49 a few months ago. Now all the Healthy Choice dinners are $3.99, and they rarely put them on sale. I read somewhere recently that people are buying more frozen foods right now. People don't go to the store as often, and frozen foods keep a lot longer than fresh foods do.

I just did some research on the cherry crop this year, and apparently California had a bumper crop last year, and that is why prices were so cheap. This year the crop is normal size, but the farmers expenses are more. They are having a hard time finding enough pickers, and are being forced to pay them more, and transportation and fertilizer is a lot more expensive this year. Washington cherries are going to be late this year. Last year Washington picked 20 million pounds of cherries, and this year they estimate their crop will only total 14 million pounds. Apparently they received lots of snow in April, which hampered cherry pollination. It sounds like Washington will not start picking many cherries until the middle of July this year. Yes. Jewel had cherries for $2.99 a few weeks ago, but the ones I bought, were not that good.

My Sister that has the farm, she told me that she had problems last summer getting enough help to pick her fruit, and that is partially why she has focused more on upick.

Did anybody get the $1.99 organic strawberries at Jewel? They were Driscoll, and so I assumed they would be good, but they weren't. I had to throw some of them out, and the rest did not have much flavor. The quart of Michigan strawberries I bought at the farmers market on Saturday were much better, but they were $7 a quart. I also bought a quart of rainer cherries at the Evanston market that were good too. The rainer cherries at Jewel were $6.99 a pound, and so they were the same price as what I paid for the Michigan ones.

Has anybody seen blueberries for sale anywhere this week? They were $4.99 a pint at Jewel, and they were $7 a pint at the farmers market. I have to go to Northbrook tomorrow, and so I might stop and get some at Mariano's if they are on sale.

    Hi,

For the first time, I saw milk at Jewel priced at two gallons for $6, which NFriday had already encountered.

Mariano's has a digital coupon to buy up to five half-gallons of milk at $1.29 each. Washington cherries are $2.99 per pound.

BTW - If I am out of town and wish to buy something that requires a special card for the discount. I either ask the person ahead of me in line to scan their card for my purchase before leaving OR advise the attendant I am from out-of-town, could I have a courtesy discount? One way or another, it works.

The cherries on sale for $1.99 a pound at Jewel, that I got Saturday, are the only decent cherries I have gotten all summer at Jewel. All of the cherries I got at the Evanston farmers market, and the ones I got from my sister in Michigan a month ago were wonderful. The last cherries I bought on Saturday at the market were from Traverse City, and were also really good. I got the last quart Keoninshof's had for sale. Whole Foods is charging $4.99 for their cherries.

+1 on the Jewel $1.99 cherries. They were large, meaty and evenly ripe. Mariano's had some pretty good ones as a $1.99 special a few weeks ago, but the Jewel cherries were even better.

Season's almost over, just ignore what does not interest you.

Jewel's cherries are still $1.99 this week, though they are boxed in three pound boxes.

There is a deal with pistachio nuts this week. I recall the last one was once it was sold-out, there were no more. Maybe this applies this time or maybe not, but not going to wait on this.

Who said cherry prices aren't interesting? Not me! I'm always on the hunt for cherries when they're in season. I just wish the cherry price posts were in one thread. For easy pickings (ha ha!)

I was in Jewel on Tuesday, and they had the $1.99 a pound cherries there in a large display, and they also had some of the three pound containers of cherries there, with no price for them. Another customer decided that she liked the three pound containers better than the smaller bags of cherries. I explained to her that they are not going on sale until the next day. She decided to come back when they were on sale.

The cherries are the only thing I see worth getting at Jewel this week though. BTW- I still saw a few cans of Folgers coffee on clearance for $6.99. and there is a $1.50 coupon off Folgers on J4U. There is also still lots of hot cocoa on clearance for 50% off, including Swiss Miss, Swiss Miss white chocolate, and Stephen's. I know it is too hot right now for hot chocolate for most people, but it keeps.

So many asked for it and nobody stepped up!

Week of Aug 3: Butera, $1.88/lb
    da Jewels, 5.97/3 lb box
can't comment on quality of either, but last week's Starr Farms and Stemlit at Jewel were excellent

Yes!! Thank you for starting the thread.

I think we still have a couple of decent weeks of fruit coming up and prices seem to be steady to softening, which makes sense.

Mariano's has Western cherries for $2.49 a pound. When I was at Jewel on Monday, they had Rainers for $5.99. Whole Foods has Western cherries for $5.99 a pound. Michigan cherries are done for the year, and so they probably won't be available at the farmers market. I got some really good cherries from Traverse City at the Evanston market on Saturday.

Hoping for softening prices but firm fruits!

A few years ago I got a bunch of cherries that are a cross between Bing and Rainier types that were named for a grower's daughter who died tragically. Does anyone else remember those? They really did have the good qualities of both. Have not seen them since.

I added more from this season to keep the cherry price tracking in one thread.

My family has bought at least 30 pounds this year. Cherries are one of the fruits that are eaten seasonally in my household. Once it is gone, it is missed until next year.

Thank you. And yes, so true. Cherries are one of the pure, seasonal joys. When the the season's over, you can still get them but they're like zombie cherries at that point . . . soulless imposters!

I've bought at least 12 pounds of cherries, with the majority of it coming from the farmer's market, but Michigan cherries are done for the year, and I might get the three pound container of cherries at Jewel in a few days, and tell myself that cherry season is over. I still have lots of blueberries I can purchase, and Michigan peaches should be really good starting this weekend. I am anxiously waiting for homegrown melons too. I am hoping I can buy some Michigan apricots tomorrow at the farmers market too.

I have seen the Skyler Rae cherries somewhere this summer, but I forget where.

Fresh Thyme has a billboard on 294 near the airport advertising cherries @ $1.99/lb with a coupon. The location shown in small print on the sign is on Rand Rd in Arlington Heights or Mt. Prospect, quite a drive from the sign. Guess they know it's worth a trip for some decent cherries.

I bought a small bag (2 lbs) of these yesterday. They're fine, very deep red, a little small but the price is right. I haven't found a nasty one yet. Butera also had literally bushel baskets full of Michigan peaches for, I think, $1.99/lb.

When I got to the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay tonight around 8:45, they were out of the three pound containers of cherries, They had smaller bags of cherries, but those were $2.99 a pound, and Rainer were $5.99 a pound. Customer service was closed, and so I could not ask for a rain check. I doubt they are going to carry them next week anyway after they go off sale.

I just checked the preview of the new Jewel ad that is starting on 8/10. and cherries are going up to $4.99 a pound. Blueberries are going up to $2.99 a pint. I am going to see if I can get one of the three pound containers of cherries before they disappear. When I went to Jewel Saturday evening, they did not have any on the shelves, and CS was closed.
