In China, one of my wife's uncles homemade an amazing raw mantis shrimp preparation that would have seriously stood out at any Michelin starred sushi place I've ever eaten at.

My wife says it's simple to make but she's never seen raw (live) Mantis Shrimp for sale anywhere in the US. She grew up eating it maybe once or twice a month for breakfast, with congee, as a kid.

As we gear up to move back to Chicago, I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that sells raw mantis shrimp (i.e. live in a tank)?

Would LOVE to even try this again soon.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I have seen live shrimp at 88 Market, though perhaps not your Mantis Shrimp. Live shrimp are also available elsewhere in Chinatown.

I had no idea what Mantis Shrimp are, but youtube to the rescue:

Seeing their aggressive behavior, they might be interesting to deal with.

They are called Mantis Shrimp but they aren't actually shrimp. They are very powerful and can legitimately "punch" holes in glass, and perhaps kill people.

Last time in Hong Kong at a seaside area, they had entire tanks of them for a few restaurants. They taste really great, but we've unfortunately never seen them anywhere in the US for sale at a market.

    most importantly

In Cantonese cuisine, the mantis shrimp is known as "pissing shrimp" (Chinese: 瀨尿蝦; pinyin: lài niào xiā; Jyutping: laaih niu hā) because of their tendency to shoot a jet of water when picked up. After cooking, their flesh is closer to that of lobsters than that of shrimp, and like lobsters, their shells are quite hard and require some pressure to crack. Usually, they are deep fried with garlic and chili peppers.
