I bought some peaches at the Evanston farmers market yesterday, and they were slightly bruised, and so I got two quarts for $5, and they were not bad. I got 10 huge peaches. I got them from K & K farms.

The problem with supermarket peaches is that they have to pick them so green, or the chain will not take them. My Father when he was still living, he used to sell the majority of his peaches to a broker at the Benton Harbor Market who sold them to a Detroit chain. I think it was Farmer Jack's. If there was one ripe peach, they would often deny the load. This just did not sit right with him, and he got to the point that he only sold Sam the broker, the minimum amount allowable to keep him happy. Some years when he had an over abundance of peaches, he needed Sam to sell peaches too. He ended up selling most of his peaches either at his fruit stand, or to other people that had fruit stands in Michigan and Indiana.

Now that my sister Annette, and her husband run the farm, they do not sell to any stores because they do not need to. She told me a few weeks ago, that she is selling all of her peaches either at the fruit stand or through upick, and she has 100 acres of peaches, and she has a full crop this year. Apparently her upick is doing really well this year. Last year she did not have upick, but everybody and their brother was canning, and so she sold lots of half bushel of peaches to canners at her fruit stand.

Michigan peaches should be almost done for the year. Get them while you can at your local farmers market. Hope this helps, Nancy

Jewel is finally coming back with a new free Saturday sampler this Saturday. It is going to be a 20 ounce bottle of coke zero sugar. I think I will pass on it.

Hi- I was in the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay last night, and they had Al Fresco seasoned ground chicken on sale for $1.99 through 10/12, for a 14 ounce package. It is normally $5.99. I also noticed today that there is a $2 off coupon for Al Fresco on J4U right now. I don't know what they would do with the overage. They also had Mighty Spark chicken and turkey burgers on sale for $1.99. There are two burgers in a package. They are also on sale through 10/12, and they are normally $7.49. Both of these are located near the clearance rack in the back of the store, near the dairy department. I don't know if they are that cheap only at that store, or whether they are on sale at the other locations.

I also got five more Healthy Choice chicken wraps for $1.48, but I think I got the last five. They have had them marked down to $1.48 for several weeks, but the shelf tag says they are $2.99. When I scanned them they rang up $1.48. They were on clearance at several other Jewel stores a month ago, and so I decided to scan them to see if they were marked down too. I have probably purchased 20 of them at that price.

The only other things on sale at Jewel this week that I am interested in are Thomas bagels and the strawberries. I also got a personalized price of $2.37 on milk. It is strange I got a personalized price of $3.39 on the Thomas bagels, but they are on sale for 2/$6 in the weekly ad. Hope this helps, Nancy

A couple good finds on the Randhurst Jewel's clearance rack:
    * Matzoh meal. This was a surprise, as during Passover season, all they stocked was matzoh cake meal. With a 2023 expiration, I can have soup for years! (I don't have much shmaltz in my freezer, I've got brisket tallow and leaf lard though).
    * Organic Lemonade, 32oz for 99c - again a 2023 expiration. We've bought half gallon bottles for parties, and much of it sits around undrunk (or drunk adding needless calories), so these will be handy

The Rolling Meadows Jewel has ground venison on sale for $4.99 a pound. I've had it a couple of times, and it's very nice.

Jewel has a new WOD today. It is Health Warrior pumpkin seed bars. Say warrior to get it for free. Warning on a Facebook group I belong to, several people got it when it was a WOD a while back, and they both said it was awful.

Don't forget about the Al Fresco seasoned ground chicken which is on sale for $1.99 at the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay, and there is a $2 off coupon on J4U. It might be on sale at other Jewel stores too. It was in the back near the clearance and milk. I've had their chicken sausage, which Jewel no longer carries, and it was good. On the clearance bin, they also had lots of matzo meal and other kosher stuff reduced.

I don't know how many people purchase this at Jewel, but I was at the Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette last night, and I purchased a can of Hills Brothers half caff coffee which was on sale for $6.99. The sign also said there was a $2 coupon off for it on J4U. When I went to check out my $2 coupon did not come off. When I looked it up when I got home, I found out that I had clipped the coupon, and the coupon said it was good on cans, but when I clicked on the participating products, only the bags were listed. I just posted about this on Jewel's Facebook page, but I don't know if they will do anything about it. There is a drought in Brazil, and so coffee is supposed to be getting more expensive.

I am happy to report that Jewel looked into the problem with the Hill's Brothers coupon, and realized that I should have had $2 taken off my bill. The next time I shop at Jewel I will have an additional $2 taken off of my bill. It will show up as a customer service credit. It pays to post on Jewel's Facebook page if you are having problems with something. I got my problem resolved in probably four hours, which I did not think would happen on a weekend.

I also made them aware of a problem they were not aware about, and saved grief for other shoppers. It sounds like they are going to correct this problem so it does not happen again.

Well my birthday is later this month, and I got an email from Jewel today wishing me a happy birthday, and informing me that my birthday reward for being a member of J4U, is double the points for the month of November. Dummy me though, I did not go to the J4U account, and click on the reward right away, and I went to Jewel this evening and spent $29, and so I am out an additional 29 points. I am still hoping with double points that I can accumulate 200 points before the month is over. You have to go to your just for you account, and tell them your birthday in order to get this. I used to get double points all the time for produce, but I have not gotten that for a while.

Hi- I used to buy Sea Pak salmon burgers at Jewel. The Green Bay store in WIlmette quit carrying them, but the Evanston Chicago Ave. store still continued to carry them. I have not seen them lately at the Evanston store either, and I was at the Kosher Jewel on Howard last night, and they did not have them. Has anybody seen them around at any of the Jewel stores? I checked at Target, and they had another brand of salmon burgers that they wanted $11.49 for four burgers. No way am I spending that much money. I was also at the Skokie Mariano's too, and they used to carry them, but they no longer do. They have another brand of salmon burgers that are $5.99 which I am willing to pay. I also checked Sams Club. They also used to carry them, and they no longer do.

The salmon burgers they have at Whole Foods are also more than I am willing to spend, and they never put them on sale. I used to get the Sea Pak ones at Jewel on sale for B1G1F, and so they were two for $8.99.

My favorite salmon burgers are Trident's, which you will sometimes see in small boxes (of 4, 1 lb?) at various grocery stores but which are sold in larger packaging (plastic bag of 10? 2.5 lbs?) and are a better price per pound at Costco.

Unfortunately I am not a member of Costco, and I went to Tridents website to see what stores carry them, and Costco is the only option that is anywhere near me.

I did look at the Sea Pak product locator, and one of the Jewel stores that is listed as carrying it, did not have it yesterday. I might call up CS at the company, and see if they can help me. I did that last year for something else I could not find, and I found out that they had temporarily stopped production on that item because of the pandemic.

I have personally found out that product locators are often not kept up to date. I have run across a few product locators that told me a particular item was available at a store that is no longer open.

I was at the Jewel on Chicago Avenue in Evanston yesterday getting a booster shot, and I noticed that they had Dalallo and Alessi canned tomatoes on clearance. They were both 28 ounce cans. The Alessi organic and basil ones were $.75, and the Dalallo cans were marked down to $1.32.

I had to go to my PCP last Friday, and she offered to give me a flu shot, and I took her up on it. It took me eight days to get the COVID booster shot, and I did not want Osco to be overwhelmed by getting my flu shot there too. I was there for 45 minutes getting the booster shot yesterday. They only had one pharmacist handling both the shots and prescriptions. They did have somebody else to handle the paperwork though, and the pharmacist only had to administer the shot. I had to remind him to give me my coupon. There was a two week wait to get the shot at the Green Bay Wilmette Osco.

You do not avoid crowds. When I went for my booster shot yesterday, there were two other people with the same appointment time. The problem is they did not hire any additional help to administer the vaccines. When I was in the Niles Osco last Friday, they had two people just administering vaccines, and so I assume there was less wait. One of my sisters went to a Walgreens in New Orleans for her booster shot, and she was there for two hours. She said they clearly did not have enough people to administer vaccines. I was only there for 45 minutes, and so it was not as bad for me.

Hi- I just went to the Jewel website to see what is on sale starting on 11/17, and while looking at the ad, I noticed that it mentioned that if there are more than three people waiting in line at any of the checkouts, Jewel will open another checkout line. While I was at the Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette recently, I noticed that there were only three checkout lanes opened not including self checkout, and all of them had way more than 3 people waiting in line. They also had signs posted encouraging people to social distance.

Under J4U Jewel is going to have sweet potatoes on sale for $.7 cents a pound, with a limit of 15 pounds at that price.

Mr. X and I made a quick stop at Jewel the other night. He needed some sausage for a dish he was making later this week. He's used smoked and Italian in the past. He grabbed a package of Jewel Polish sausages. These were not smoked Polish and not the good Polish deli fresh sausage. I resisted the urge to say no because it was his dish. I regret that decision. Not quite the worst thing I've ever eaten but not anything I want again. There are a few in the freezer that he didn't use in the dish. All his. ;-)

I went to the Jewel on Chicago Ave. after I left the farmers market at Immanuel this afternoon. Somebody was mentioning that Jewel did not have many good deals this week, but I saved 50% on my purchases today. I got lots of the $.07 a pound sweet potatoes, and then I got a can of Folger's coffee for $3.74. I also had a personalized price for Cabot cheese, and I had two $1 off coupons for it, and so I got a pound of Cabot cheese for $3.96, and I had a personalized price for Edy's ice cream and Pepperidge Farm bread. I saved over $9 by using J4U. Jewel was crowded when I got there, but by the time I was ready to check out, the lines at the checkout were short.
