Nearly a month of empty shelves @ Montrose store. Out of 1/2 of what I normally buy there.

Similar story at the Des Plaines location near me, although not quite as empty as you describe. Spoke to an employee who says they've switched to a new distribution model that has everything screwed up. She says employees are just as frustrated as the customers, but not much they can do about it. Management has been promising for weeks that solutions are just around the corner, but no improvement yet.

Other than the smallish size of some Winn Dixies, and possibly the income levels of customers (altho Aldi has spent years trying to be Trader Joes with mixed success), it's hard to imagine a lot in common. I guess Food Lion would be a bigger stretch...

A fond memory of WD Louisville: Occasionally the deli at the JTown store would make rolled oysters in an electric skillet according to an employee's home recipe. Way better than any of the restaurants in town that claimed to have invented the rolled oyster.

Three months ago, back in Ohio, I purchased "Tri-color Legume Rice" as a side dish from ALDI. As I ended up not serving it, I brought it back home.

I pulled it out today to serve with some salmon that I am baking as I wanted a rice dish (and I am out of rice in the house until I get to H-Mart this weekend).

    Ingredients:
    Red Lentil flour
    Green pea flour
    Chickpea flour

Is this actually properly called rice or should it be called PASTA???

The long-awaited Six Corners Aldi grocery store will open next month, company officials said. The store will open with a ribbon-cutting 8 a.m. March 7 at 3930 N. Kilpatrick Ave., said Dan Jaster, executive assistant for Aldi’s Batavia Division. The store will be 20,400 square feet and will be open 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily, Jaster said.

I might go there that week. I respond mainly to mention that The Weekly Flyer for ZIP Codes around it may have a glossy sheet for dollars off a $50.00+ purchase from it for a limited time. Be aware.

Discount grocer Aldi unveiled a five-year expansion plan Thursday to add 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028.

Why it matters: The nation's fastest-growing grocery chain's expansion will "ramp up the competitive pressure in the grocery market," said Neil Saunders, GlobalData managing director.

I love ALDI, but based on the constant product shortages and empty shelves I've seen over the last year, they should focus on improving their current distribution and supply chain before they add another 800 stores.

Impressions of the new Aldi @ 3930 N. Kilpatrick Ave.

I waited for the weather to get warmer before shopping the new Aldi. This became Monday, 11 March 2024.
Because of the odd shape of its real estate parcel, there are two entrances, both numbered 3930 (for Kilpatrick ~ Milwaukee Ave. is also a north-south avenue, so the address for it would be an odd number). It is store #83. Entrance from Milwaukee is direct from the sidewalk. The address numbered for Kilpatrick actually faces north {There is a stunning direct view from this front door to the "Jewel-Osco" signage on its edifice [4660 W. Irving Park].}. The parking lot for here is off Kilpatrick. There is a Chipotle fast food stand between the Aldi and Irving Park.
(You can ask me; but there are other fast food and fast service restaurants nearby if you feel you should dine before shopping here. See a map.)
Alcohol was ruled out for counting toward the $30.00 minimum purchase, but this was moot because the package liquor license for here has not yet been received.
Since I was riding transit here, big, bulky items were precluded.
The items bought were chocolates, black tea, green tea, baking soda (for Mirko's litterbox), lunchbox pies (Apple - all the Cherry boxes had been picked), cinnamon raisin bagels, hot dog buns, & three cans of its store brand cat foods.
Here is the receipt showing the five dollar discount. Image
Will I shop here more often? I honestly do not know. The Aldi where I more frequently shop is on W. Diversey, across from the WalMart (& the Aldi manager has permission to match select prices of WalMart). However, if Aldi keeps including its advert in the Weekly Flyer for 60641, it will be contemplated regularly.

Aldi will be dropping prices on more than 250 items this summer to combat inflation.

“With more experts warning of persistent inflation, the time was right to deliver even greater discounts on our already low prices for the second year in a row," Dave Rinaldo, president at Aldi U.S., said in a statement.

They are lowering their prices as they are no longer competitive in Arizona with Winco Foods, Walmart, and the sales prices at the Kroger affiliate.

Currently available in the refrigerated section at Aldi: Grillo's Pickles "Pickle de Gallo".

Tastes pretty much exactly the way you'd expect something called *Pickle* de Gallo would taste. All the textural qualities of a traditional Mexican Pico de Gallo, but with a distinct sour pickle taste. Works equally well as a salsa and a topping for burgers and sausages. Available in "mild" and "medium hot". Didn't note the price, but IIRC, very reasonable.

So now I have to get back to Aldi soon -- since things often vanish -- but this sounds very much worth trying out. Thanks, Buddy.

Yesterday, ran across something labeled as "Limited Edition": Truffle Dip. Since Trader Joe's truffle aioli is seasonal, and now out of season, I was happy to try this. Very tasty. Hope it's not too limited, as I'd like to get it again.

Can't say enough good things about the knöpfli; available in the frozen section. They're a Swiss pasta, similar to späetzle, but a little bigger, served with either a lemony greens, or cheese truffle sauce.

What I really wish they'd bring back are the schupfnudeln they carried two Oktoberfests ago. They're kinda like German gnocchi, with more of a fingerling shape. Google describes them as "German potato noodles". Aldi's version, also found in the frozen section, was light and airy, almost as good as the gnocchi served at Freddy's Pizza in Cicero.

The Aldi in Morton Grove on Golf just got rebuilt and there was a "grand opening" last week.

The store is at least twice the size of the old one. They added the space where San Soo Kab San had been.

Starting my grocery shopping at Fresh Farms and polishing it off at Aldi is a pretty good 1-2 punch.
