Hit a new place called Archies Flat Top yesterday. Great griddled burgers with the "burnt" edges. Just down the street is a place called Wild Roots and they make a great Duck Fat Burger, melts in your mouth. Both worth the trip. Plus West Allis Cheese Shop and Becher Meats are on the same street.

We were driving from a hotel on the east side of Madison to a 2 PM baby shower in Westfield, WI, 55 miles north, so googled a place for lunch nearby and wound up at Big Dog Saloon in Portage. Wow! This was one of the best burgers in my recent memory! Not sure if they used butter, or magic, it was so juicy! It was a 1/3 pound burger, ordered as a cheeseburger, normally $6.00 and on special for $5.50. Also available as a double, and with various toppings. The bartender, Phyllis, served as the cook on a Saturday afternoon. I asked if anything came on the burger, so I would know what to delete, and the response was, "No. It's a cheese burger." Loved that! Two cheeseburgers, a full order of hot, crispy, and just-the-right-amount-of-salty "skinny fries" (the other option was "battered", Phyllis recommended skinny, both are available as full or half orders), a side of cod nuggets, a can of Diet Coke, and a Spotted Cow on draft totaled $28.50. Bonus points for sitting on barstools and chatting with locals who said they are there four days a week. Cash only, ATM on site, along with a pool table, foosball, some video games, and a pull-tab machine.

We were here over the weekend. Loved the burgers and the fries (perfect crisp outside with melt in your mouth inside). It's a great space too.

Also thank you to all who have posted on this thread over the years - we would never have found this place and had the pleasure of eating here without the info you shared!

Made an impromptu dinner stop at Bud Willman's Lunch on Monday. The old school diner, open since 1952, was crazy busy and the 3 female employees - ages 16, 17 & 20 - really kept pace with a youthful zeal and athleticism that was admirable. When the carbonation machine for the soda fountain briefly went out, the 16-year old took charge and proudly announced that she had fixed it herself - "and it was hot back there!" The process of smash-grilling the burgers has been handed down to the 17-year old from the owner, and from all appearances, she's got it aced. In addition to the outstanding burgers, my dining partner and I also enjoyed a fabulous root beer float and chocolate shake made with French vanilla ice cream, no doubt from Cedar Crest. And the price was right! Cash only.
