Monteverde's potato-filled zlikrofi pasta, served with fresh Burgundy truffle, was the star amongst stars of an all-around outstanding carryout meal

Perhaps this was all gone over previously in the thread. I googled Monteverde and came up with this:

    1020 West Madison Street
    Chicago IL 60607

I assume it is what you were referring to?

Take out cassoulet from Aboyer, yesterday evening.

The gold standard for me was Leslie Reis' from Cafe Provencal in Evanston, back from last century. The cassoulet I picked up last night was the first I tasted in 30 years that closely matched that standard.

There was enough for a leftover meal, and the onion soup and creme brulee (in a chocolate cup!) were also excellent.

Perfect high end comfort food! Perfect.

During this pandemic, Aboyer has consistently been the best take out we have had. Such care has been taken to make sure that the food arrived warm or had instructions how to finish cooking at home. And the quality of the food has been excellent. We ate on their patio two weekends ago, and now with the cold weather we will continue to support them through carry-out.

Not sure if there's a best product you've bought lately kind of thread, but this is gonna be the best thing I've eaten lately...

Bushel & Peck's Strawberry and Habanero Jam.

Bought it on a whim, fully expecting it to be a gimmicky, buzz word jar of yawn.
Next time I see it, I'm buying it all, just in case they don't restock, or Bushel & Peck decides to stop production.

    https://bushelandpecks.myshopify.com/collections/jam-made-by-bushel-pecks/products/strawberry-habanero-jam

Also, I'm gonna try some of their other products too. Looking for the website to post, is the first time I've seen their list of products

    Back to this Strawberry/Hab jam:
I assumed it was gonna be a hint of spicy, like pretty much every single jam with some kind of supposed hot pepper I've tried before. I bought this one as an add on to a gift card I was buying from a food shop for an xmas gift. Matter of fact, I had this strawberry/hab, and a peach/jalapeno, and I was choosing which one to gift, and which one to keep, but I forgot if the gift recipient was a fan of spicy shit, and I'm planning on making a batch of peach / serrano at home soon, so I put the peach back, and decided to just keep this Strawberry / Hab for myself because I was hangry. I decided while shopping that I was gonna spend some money on good cheese and expensive bread for lunch, and the jam seemed to sound good. Wound up with some cowgirl creamery and a loaf of publican sourdough. Um..YUM! ANyway...this jam...

It's almost everything. It might could use about a few more Scoville UNits, but as is, I guarantee you it's too spicy for some people. I'm not a good judge, because I really like spicy stuff. It's not over the top with stupid, overpowering heat (but it might be for some.) But it's not a joke, either. The thing that gets me is that:
    1. It's definitely spicier than most other "spicy jams" I've tried.
    2. It definitely has habanero FLAVOR, not just the heat.
    3. The actual strawberry flavor is way up there.
    4. The ingredient list is Strawberries, natural fruit pectin, cane sugar, habanero and lime juice.

It's an 8 oz jar that I bought on Sunday. I've eaten more than half of it already. If I see it again, I'm buying all of it.

I agree. Really good. You probably know that they show up @ the Oak Park Farmer's Market about once a month (although that's no help at present). They have a store in Beloit. It's not that far, at least if you're driving to Madison. Pretty much all they make is excellent. I especially like their pickles and fermented stuff.

VI - I found the Straw/Hab and Peach/Jalapeno at Sugar Beet. Not sure if they had more of their products, But good to know that B&P's other products might be excellent. Definitely gonna give them a chance with more stuff. I remember last year at the OP Farmer's Mkt, I spoke with one of the jam purveyors about the lack of any heat in their pepper flavors as I was taste testing. It very well could have been Bushel&Peck for all I know. But this jar I have is really freekin good.

I got both of their spicy flavors as a Nichols csa add on. Haven't opened the straw/hab yet but the peach/jalapeno is outstanding.

The Basque cheesecake from Au Levain, a virtual bakery operating out of Bistro Campagne in Lincoln Square (4518 N. Lincoln Ave), by their pastry chef. Order online, pickups Wednesdays and Sundays. We also enjoyed his challah, kouign amann with brie & apple butter, and are looking forward to the chocolate chip cookie dough we placed in the freezer, but it was the cheesecake that made me regret telling anyone it was here.

Very glad to be acquainted with this site! Thanks, Ron. I was drawn to the Beet Ketchup, and then mildly frustrated that there's no screenshot of the back of the bottle which might show the full list of ingredients. That seems to be the case with the other products I looked at on the site as well. It's not so much that I'd expect anything but wonderfulness, as that it might increase my drool factor and keep me on the page longer. Ah well.

Pav Bhaji filled Masala Dosa at Annapurna on Devon.

I usually get the regular Masala Dosa. But the use of the Pav Bhaji curry instead was fantastic. It also had the addition of the butter that is characteristic of good Pav Bhaji.

Also, Awami Bazaar store is selling prepackaged flatbreads from a Canadian company. I have tried them all and am especially pleased with their Methi Paratha and a Besan Flour Paratha. I have never had this Besan Paratha before.

ETA: The Chickpea flatbread is not as strong as the regular parathas, due to the fact that chickpea flour has no gluten; so the thing is very flimsy. But it tastes wonderful.

Silky Tofu with salty Yolks at Chef Xiong in Chinatown.

It was listed in the Chef's specials section; which I normally don't bother with in Chinese restaurants as they are never vegetarian friendly. But I was informed this is meat free so I ordered it. When it came to the table; small pieces of Silken Tofu floating in a bright orange eggy yolk sauce; I was underwhelmed by the taste and aroma. It had the sulphurous funk that is characteristic of egg yolks; and not much flavor other than salt.

I asked for some ground pepper; and was given a generous amount from the Chef's station. This transformed this dish. I now understand why Europeans wanted to find routes to get to South India to get this spice for themselves, without having to pay exorbitant prices to the middlemen!! This may be the BEST dish I have had in Chinatown. I still like my Mapo Tofu and Eggplant in Garlic sauce and the like ...! But this was fantastic. Who knew that the addition of just one spice could transform a dish like this.

Next time I am going to try a combination of Black Pepper and Szechwan Peppers.

i've never been a regular at cafe selmarie, but after picking up some pre-ordered books at The Bookcellar (where they trust people to grab only their own books from the pick up cart in the vestibule between the 2 sets of doors (!)), i bought a slice of almond torte at selmarie. it was one of the best pieces of cake i've had in a long while. it's a tall, 1 layer cake with a very thin cookie like bottom, topped by a thin layer of fantastic seed-free raspberry preserves (housemade??) under the almond torte. very, very moist, and what was weird was i paid for 1 slice, but they gave me 2...

    Crab Cake -- cheddar jalapeno brioche bun, pickled rhubarb and apple slaw, ramp aoli, crispy shallots;

    Trumpet Fritter -- Crispy fried trumpet mushrooms and pimiento cheese, rhubarb-apple slaw, ramp aioli, crispy shallots;

    Asparagus &. Wild Rice Salad.

I loved the Trumpet Fritter. Lucky for us, they are doing it again this weekend.

Hello all. Long time lurker (since ~2017) but first time poster. I've never had much of an urge to post as I don't regard myself much of a food expert, but I figure my opinion is better than nothing on some of these threads that haven't had an update in years. This is 100% my go to website for restaurant recommendations, so I can only hope I can give back even a small fraction of what I've gotten from reading this forum.

I've been on a bit of a south GNR kick of late and they've really lived up to the hype. These are the GNRs I've visited in the past 3 months and still recommend:

Troha's - fried shrimp - neutral flavor but perfectly fried. Shrimp was perfectly cooked and the batter was light and crisp

Rincon Azteca (La Quebrada Cicero) - Grilled steak with arbol sauce and pork rinds - apparently the La Quebrada in Cicero changed its name but I enjoyed the food none the less. The char flavor from the grill really stood out and was nicely complemented by the arbol sauce and the texture of the pork rinds

Big Guy's Sausage stand - 12th street polish, hot dog, shrimp po'boy - All 3 were great, especially the polish.

Alegria's Seafood - pulpo especial - Most tender octopus I've ever had. I never knew octopus could taste like that. The ceviche and coco relleno were mediocre however.

Stop 50 - Pesto Pizza - Really fresh ingredients and the flavors all complemented each other well.

Calumet Fisheries - Smoke Shrimp - great smoky flavor and the shrimp was done perfectly

Katy's Dumpling House (Oak Park) - Beef noodle soup - Didn't stand out to me quite as much as the GNRs above, but still a very enjoyable bowl.

Schoops - Schoop burger - This is the only one that was a miss. Perfectly fine burger, but unspectacular
