Please, only post basic information about openings and closings
    on this thread.

If you have something substantive or want to share an opinion, it does not belong here, so please do not post it here. Instead, please add the information to an already existing thread, or start a new one if one doesn't already exist. Because important details will almost certainly get lost and forgotten in this thread, any discussion that takes place here will be removed and relocated to a dedicated thread.

If you post about an opening, please consider also creating a new thread and linking to it for further discussion. If you post about a closing, please also link to an existing thread, if one exists, to direct further discussion.

    Important Reminder About Accuracy:
Additionally, we want to remind you not to post about a closing without making absolutely certain that your information is correct and accurate in every way.

Please do not post rumors of closings without linking to a credible, 3rd-party source that substantiates your report. (i.e. "Eater.com reports . . ." is ok)

Please remember that per our Posting Guidelines, posts pertaining to health code-related issues are also not permitted here unless they include a link to a credible, third-party source.

Please keep in mind that it's far more important to be accurate than fast with your information. The best course of action may be to make a phone call to the establishment in question before posting anything. But whatever you do, make sure you are 100% correct before posting about a closing on this thread or any other thread in these forums. Erroneous posts about closings will be removed without notification.

    Thanks again,

Just noticed this, so I'll count it as 2022, but a Moroccan restaurant opened in Irving Park on Elston a few months back. They have sandwiches, tagines, and a bunch of other things I don't recognize (because I don't know Moroccan food very well). A number of pastry-like foods served here. They also serve sugar cane juice. All of their food is Zahiba Halal.

They have a few unusual dishes I've never seen on Middle Eastern menus, but their overall menu seems more generalized - from tagine and some Moroccan specialties like pastille to biryani and mansif . The reference to Nabulsia seems like it would be Palestinian, though.

I expected them to be Palestinian because of the name too. Was surprised when it was Moroccan instead.

The dessert, Kunafa Nabulsia, is Arabic, and Morocco is half Arab (other half is Berber). So this must reflect the Arab half of Morocco. When I was in Morocco, I noticed a distinct change in cuisine when I moved from the Arab part to the Berber part.

Francesca's on Bryn Mawr has closed after 20 years. It was a reliable place in the neighborhood. That stretch of Bryn Mawr between Sheridan and Broadway is going through a rough patch. Nookies closed. That location became Phlour Diner for one hot minute, then that closed. The Red Line construction certainly isn't helping.

Looks to be about one month ago that the space formerly DBA Skipjack Modern Japanese Restaurant in the plaza at the NE corner of Golf and Waukegan, headed by a Mariano's location, reopened as Kyoto Garden Modern Japanese Restaurant (I think they just moved the subtitle up the facade with the new name since the font is exactly the same). Yelp has merged Skipjack onto the new restaurant for now, separate ownership is presumed, but unconfirmed.

Open on Tuesdays, unlike Kuni's and Sushi Kaya, hence on my radar.

Got carry-out, confirmed it's new owners, but the same sushi chef as Skipjack. No complaints about the maki and "poke salad" (poke atop seaweed salad). It's just a terrible location on the northern end of the plaza offset from Waukegan with minimal view. The parking lot does them no favors with awkward access/rows. Nice interior with very fair drink prices.

Last weekend, I kept seeing comments about Gulliver's closing. Yet, it was not on their facebook or website. I really did not want to call to inquire about their fate. It was suggested to call about a party in the future, then wait for their reaction.

I believe years ago, there was an LTH lunch there.

How different are Chilean empanadas from Argentine empanadas. (I ask simply because there is a place in Palatine that makes Argentine empanadas.)

If I recall correctly, Argentinian empanadas are typically fried and typically are fairly small. Cheese is typical, but there are probably other typical fillings. Argentinian empanadas are great appetizers, great happy hour bar food.

Chilean empanadas are much bigger, sized like Michigan pasties. One is a lunch. They are typically baked rather than fried. The classic Chilean empanada is the empanada de pino, which contains primarily ground beef with sauce, plus some slices of hard-boiled egg, black olive, and raisins (I'm not saying these add anything, in my opinion, but they're traditional), so in the sense that they're beef-based, they're similar in ingredients to Michigan pasties, but Chilean empanadas do not contain potatoes.

In Chile, empanadas de pino (beef-based) are baked, but empanadas de queso (with cheese) or empanadas with seafood (can't quite remember at the moment what these are called ... let's say shrimp, so, empanadas de camarones?) are fried. The fried cheese ones may be a nod to the popularity of Argentinian happy hour fried cheese empanadas (which, believe it or not, are available as a side at KFC in Santiago). I think the fried seafood empanadas are probably a nod to the abundance of inexpensive shellfish in Chile combined with the fact that shellfish in an empanada probably does not toughen up if deep-fried quickly as it would if it were baked.

Colombian empanadas are also a thing --- a good thing, as I recall -- but I cannot recall at the moment how Colombian empanadas differ from Argentian and Chilean empanadas.
