I usually ignore Facebook ads, but one for Au Levain Chicago caught my eye. It is a pop-up bakery by the pastry chef of Bistro Campagne. The pain aux raisins is calling my name. Has anyone tried their goods?

The breakfast challah with bacon might make my mom spin in her grave but he has a nice selection.

I ordered pickup for Sunday, February 14 and loved everything! This was my first Basque cheesecake so I have no point of comparison, and now have no need for others as long as this remains available. Other items we ordered were challah (plain, no bacon), chocolate chip cookie dough (haven't baked them yet, vacuum-sealed in portions of 2, 4, 6 and placed in the freezer), and kouign-amann with brie + apple butter. Bistro Campagne has been one of my favorite carryout options since early Covid, so it was no surprise that ordering and pickup were smooth, safe, and easy.

The siren song of the seasonal berry challah was too strong to resist. It is filled with vanilla pastry cream with cookie crumbles with housemade blueberry lavender preserve and fresh blueberries. Tasty but I wanted more filling throughout.

I realized I hadn't posted photos of my first sampling of Au Levain. Pain au raisins was perfect. I enjoyed the brie/apple butter kouign aman as well. Can't go wrong with chocolate cream pie!

Today I picked up my first order from Au Levain at Bistro Campagne. I ordered nine items. When I drove all the way home and went through everything, I found that one item was missing. I'm too far away to bother driving all the way back to get the missing item. The quality of the baked goods is excellent, but I'm a bit disappointed.

I strongly recommend that if you're going to order from them, you carefully go through everything you receive while you're still there.

Au Levain, the pandemic-era bakery run out of Bistro Campagne, has plans for a permanent location. Owner and baker Angel Chavez hasn’t revealed details but has signed a letter of intent at an undisclosed address.

Four blocks from my house. Shame on me for waiting this long. Most of the offerings today were various laminated pastries but I couldn't resist the Basque cheesecake with figs and a salted caramel sauce. Really great. Only possible improvement would have been better figs but that's always a bit of a crapshoot in Chicago.

He offers a decent selection, however my mom might spin in her grave over the breakfast challah with bacon.
