    Why does a Binny's need a soft opening? It's a liquor store.

Not true. Evanston's excise tax on alcoholic beverages is 6 percent (ref). The total tax added to your purchases in Evanston is 16 percent, but the other 10 percent consists of sales tax that you'll pay anywhere in Cook County, with minor variations (≤1%) from one municipality to another. Chicago also has an excise tax on booze, but Skokie and Wilmette do not.

Not sure whether this was intended as humor, but yes, a few years ago. Of course, the other two Whole Foods in Evanston - one of which is just a few blocks north of the one they closed - remain open.

Soft opening today. Large, well-stocked, although not as large as the South Loop store. Excellent prices on many things, although I don't expect that to last once they become established. I passed on a few of the $5,000 bottles in the rare and collectible section.

There's a coupon in their flyer (available in the store) for 15 percent off all the booze, yesterday and today only.

Also an online coupon for $2 off build-your-own beer six pack, taking the price to $7.99

I may have missed another mention since the name of the place (1415 or One Four One Five) is not the most searchable, but this Chinese spot I really admired on Fullerton looks to have shuttered as reported on Yelp and in a personal walk-by of the address; lease sign is up.

I had one lunch at 1415 Fullerton Szechuan about a year ago. I left annoyed, unsatisfied and would have been happier with a fish sandwich from McD's.

We did. It was reliable, friendly, and a decent example of the all-purpose, family-restaurant coffee-shop type. In fact, one of the few remaining examples of its type in the Loop, which made it increasingly special.

Braciole Station is closed per Google. I walked past there yesterday and there was a big Restaurant for Sale sign in the window.

Braciole Station was closed in September with several closed signs. Google reported it closed while Yelp had it closed until September 30, so I did not report it as closed. In October there was a small for sale sign in the window while the previous closed signs were gone. Recently there has been a big for sale sign from a well-known restaurant broker. Hours had been erratic relative to posted hours leaving me uncertain that it was really closed even though it was not open every time I passed by when it should have been open. Web site is still up as of this evening.

With the volume Chinn's does (#30 top grosser in the country, most of the ones above it are chains and with much higher per-person checks), I can't imagine that BFM will make much difference to them.

Chinn's in number 17 on the list by meals served, averaging about 1300 covers a day from 736 seats. That's about 1.7 covers per day per seat. Gibson's downtown does over 3 covers per seat, so Chinn's could use more business.

Boston Fish Market does a pretty impressive job with its very limited space. Remains to be seen what it can do with a more traditional restaurant format with much more capacity.

It was my understanding, and I will try to cite some bona fide documentation, that Chinn's has/had been very aggressive in their efforts to disrupt Boston Fish's efforts to open.

bummer: blommer's chocolate, perfuming the west loop since 1939, announced they've finalized a sale to a japanese company. the blommer family can retire in luxury after this sale, i hope the longtime employees get to keep their jobs. i never trust what the buyer says: we'll see if they keep operations running with the same team...what a shame.

That's three up-market restaurants Irving Park has lost in just a couple years (Bread & Wine and Al Dente). It seemed to me like some restaurateurs were trying to make Irving Park "happen" a little ahead of schedule. Or maybe it was the next best place where they could afford the rent.

That sucks. I live a few blocks away and ate there a few times. It was very good. But, so tucked away on a nothing part of the block, you wouldn't even know it was a restaurant unless you walked in the door. Looked more like a bar from the outside.

Not happy to hear about all the good restaurants leaving the neighborhood, but we still have some new places making noise like Hearth and Crust.
