Just made it here this week and was pretty impressed. Though the huitlacoche quesadilla was a little on the greasy side for my taste. So off menu tortas? Any meat? What else is on it? I think huaraches are a good idea too.

I took my wife and we tried the tortas. Best I have had in Chicago so far. Soft bread (none of those abominable crusty breads they serve at Xoco), generous guacamole and some of the best lengua I have ever eaten. Also the salsas and tortillas here are top notch. This is my new mexican street food joint of choice.

As an Authentaco virgin I stopped by for a Cinco de Mayo lunch. Both the lengua and al pastor tacos were the best I've had in Chicago. Probably the best I've had anywhere. Perhaps even better was chatting with the lovely Colleen Rush who recognized me from lth events. It's amazing what this board can do!

Okay, uhm, no. I am guessing the colloquial papas is used for father's day versus the more formal padre. I also learned that in spain they use patatas for potato versus papas, used in other spanish speaking countries.

True story from the Bar Corban in Santander, Cantabria:

We're sitting outside waiting for tapas. The waiter brings a sizzling iron platter of patatas bravas to the table, sort of like saganaki would be delivered in Greektown. My friend Jake, startled by the heat behind his head, says "Jesus!"

    Waiter: "No Jesus. Patatas."

(the fact that the waiter said "Jesus" in an American accent was one of the best parts)

When I was @ the East Bank Club circa 85 i was given a huge amount of baby cheeses as a sample once. Had no use for them really, but on a buffet around xmas I found some straw and made this great display and called it "little baby cheeses in the manger". That and serving baby carrots w/rabbit were ways I amused myself.

That habanero salsa at Authentaco was on fire. And our friends thought the horchata was the best they have had.

Due to a private event, Authentaco will be closed Sat Oct 10 @ 4 pm.

On another note, felt that I should mention that outside of occasional posts on their behalf, I haven't been involved in the operations for @ least 6 months.

Yeah huitlacoche that's 75% green peppers.

    Tortillas still good though.

I can't speak to that, but (@ least while I was there) the huit had zero green peppers in it. There was always portabellas though. The same chef I hired is still cooking all the food though and can't imagine he's lost his palate. Armando is excellent.

Oh, I know, I've eaten dozens of the huitlacoche quesadillas. Perhaps it was a one off case of extending the product.

I stand corrected. There was a small amount of jalapeño in the orig recipe, but when I looked @ the revamped recipe (something I haven't had the need to do for quite awhile) along w/epazote there are poblanos and green peps in it. Some adjustments were made when we hired the chef @ the time, the guy that's been cooking pretty much since we opened.

When did they switch to paper trays instead of the metal ones? The paper tray made it fairly awkward to eat the quesadilla. It was still delicious though. And did the habanero salsa undergo a gringo-ization? There was not that much heat in it this past Saturday.

According to Eater, Authentaco is closing. I used to live nearby and would go nearly every week. Their quesadillas, with made-to-order tortillas were addicting. Hoping that Picante, which is also moving, will add these to their new menu.
