The Twisted Vine appears to be set to open any day now; for ten years it was a wine store (Gourmet Grape) and the owners briefly shuttered to reconcept as a wine bar. It will feature wine (flights, by the bottle and glass) as well as bourbons flights. While they are not preparing food on premise, they plan to have a limited amount of small plates available such as cheeses and charcuterie. I happened to walk by yesterday and it looks like it will be a nice space.

I was recently looking at the Building Permits database for Chicago and ran across something interesting. Looks like yesterday a renovation permit ("Already existing restaurant with existing plans" or something like that) for $450,000 was granted at 1030 N State. This appears to be the old Trader Vic's spot across the street from Gibson's (in Newberry Plaza).

Under one of the contractor fields, it says the type is "Owner" and the name is "Amedeo Italian Delights." Not sure about everything but this is fairly interesting..

For those of us in Lincoln Square (and neighboring areas) that love to cook and need good quality spices, you'll be happy to know that Savory Spice Shop is opening this summer at 4753 N. Lincoln Ave. A quick search online suggests they have a Hinsdale location, but I can't seem to find that location listed on the main website.

However, I've shopped with my mom at the Palm Desert, CA location and I was quite impressed with the freshness/quality and variety of the spices carried.

Edwardo's is dying a slow death. With this closing I believe they are now down to 8 locations. That's too bad because in my estimation they're one of the best local-chain deep-dish/stuffed pizza joints around. A bit expensive, but worth it.

They're both seriously contracted in size from where they were in the 90's: There used to be two Edwardo's in delivery distance (the Wheeling one is actually closer to my house than the Mt Prospect one that was on 83 near Oakton, but only the latter would deliver to me before it closed a half-dozen years ago).

Giordano's has also closed two delivery-distance restos since I moved to Mount Prospect 20 years ago: one on Rand near Kensington that's now a Heavenly Massage (perhaps they kept some machines for kneading dough?), and one in Niles near Golf Mill.

The last time I had Edwardo's it was not as good as I'd remembered (but what is?), but I've always liked their Spinach version. Giordano's was always a little denser, although their crust may be closer to the tender/flaky sweet spot.

Crossing my fingers that it's good and opens soon; middle eastern food within quick walking distance from home would certainly be a welcome addition.

I work 5 minutes from the Edwardo's in Wheeling. They blew it with my entire office. Their lunch pizzas were so mediocre. I figured they were pre-made but still, they were just lousy in every way.

If I'm forced to have stuffed pizza (which is probably at the bottom for pizza styles for me), I would go to Art of Pizza (on Ashland), that's probably the best overall.

The new Argo Tea Greenhouse opened at Rush, Wabash, and Chestnut in the Gold Coast. It's pretty much all a public park still but really, really cool as I checked it out today. It's going to add even more vibrancy to the area just like how Mariano Park a few blocks north (Viagra Triangle) does. They were also having live music outside. Can't wait in a few days and summer when it's warmer out. I think this area is going to be special.

    Jefferson Park is now open.

Looks like there's a grocery going in around 6103 N. Northwest Highway. I believe the name was something like Northwest Fresh Market.

This is now open and it's really nice. It looks like a more upscale Happy Foods, with a beautiful produce section and tiny bakery.

Finnegan's the faux-Irish restaurant/pub, which used to be Blue Angel, in Gladstone Park, on Milwaukee Ave., is now shuttered. They had less than a year run.

Coming soon: Elly's! I am pleased not only for myself and Mr. Pie as we will soon have a new place to go on our anniversary, but this should do well, assuming they get rid of the stank.
