I've heard, but haven't personally verified, that Sweet Occasions took over the Sweeties location on Clark. They also have a seasonal location on Morse that should be open soon if it isn't already, although again this is secondhand. They serve ice cream made by The Chocolate Shoppe as well.

Ice Dreams is indeed closed. Now and again, I peek in between the sheets of Paper lining the window. The equipment is still there.

Maybe its a perfect time for one of our entrpreneurial LTHers to cut a deal with the landlord and open that space back up (or move it to some ice cream deprived location).

Sweet Occasions is indeed moving on to Clark in the Andersonville area, and has another shop further down Clark, in addition to Damen.

There's Pudgies on Western just north of Lawrence. For about two seconds, that area had four ice cream places (the others were G.P. Franklin's, Miranda's and Tropical Shipwreck, though it may have just had frozen coffee drinks). Apparently I cursed them all by writing about them. So forget I mentioned Pudgies.

Southport may have more than the Australian and the Double Rainbow outlets-- that not-very-good sub shop has ice cream too, right? And Australian is also in Fields' State Street store, I'm pretty sure.

Rob, don't forget about the new-ish Bobtail Ice Cream Company at 2951 N. Broadway. They make their own ice cream on site (with a glass window where you can view their kitchen), and have a bunch of interesting flavors including a merlot/chocolate chunk combination "Signature Sunset" and a chocolate/Jack Daniels mixture "Lakeview BarHopper"

Sugar Buzz at 2909 N. Broadway opened within a week of Bobtail, a block and half north. They don't make their own ice cream (they use a San Francisco brand), but I prefer it to Bobtail's homemade. Nobody ever goes there, though, as opposed to Bobtail which gets pretty packed. I feel bad for them every time I walk by, but their store isn't as cute or in as good a location as Bobtail.

Windy City Sweets at 3308 N. Broadway. They make their own chocolates, but not their ice cream.

Even with the demise of Ice Dreams, we are not suffering for lack of ice cream here in Lakeview East!

Add Canady le Chocolatier to your list. Their hand-made truffles and chocolates are the real draw here, but the creamy artisanal gelati are also worth the trip.

Stopped in at Bobtail yesterday for a cup of chocolate chip. The chips were thinly shaved but substantial and nearly overwhelmed the vanilla flavor, which means it was close to perfect. The lady had peanut butter chip, which seemed quite good as well, but I couldn't roust myself from my own ice dream sufficiently to fully appreciate hers. My introduction to Bobtail was their Merlot chip, which rubbed me the wrong way, but perhaps I'll try it again sometime.

    Rob,

I assume we are talking about places that are more ice cream centered rather than say what is offered at desserts in more fullscale restaurants? Or the roving/stationary helado vendors and carts?

    anyway here's a coupla additions

    La Monarca Paleteria
    6955 N. Clark
    (773) 274-6394

mothership of all those carts around town, with the very nice cocoleche, and arroz con leche bars. The labeled ice cream in the freezer are pretty standard but the unlabeled helados are pretty nice

Dave's Ice Cream & Italian Ice
    1451 W. 18th

It's been a long while since i've been back, but they had a very nice tamarindo ice. Anyone know if they're still around/still decent?

    Italian Coffee bar

    Sherman & Grove
    Evanston

My last visit to Mitsuwa (quite some time ago), there were 2 locations for Ice cream, the stand alone place in the food cart and then the small selection at the bakery. I preferred the bakery ice cream -especially the black sesame

    ReneG Mentioned this one:

    Hi,

If Italian ices are welcome in the world of ice cream, then:

    Mario's Italian Lemonade
    1068 W Taylor St
    Chicago
    (no phone)

    Ferro's Italian Beef
    200 W 31st St
    Chicago , IL 60616
    312-791-1818

Last night I hung out at Mario's for quite a while discussing food and restaurants with Mario's manager Bill. I keep encouraging him to read and perhaps post on LTHforum. All their flavors are additions to their Italian Lemonade base. So if you order watermelon, chocolate or anything else, you will always find some lemon peel somewhere.

Double Rainbow has indeed closed - not sure if it's due to Cold Stone Creamery moving in across the street or that their ice cream was terrible.

And yes, Dairy Queen is moving in in the old Banana Leaf location - you can't miss the 50 foot sign out front.

BTW - is Austrailian on Southport still open? It never seems to be open whenever I walk past...

    zim,

after lunch at Birrieria Reyes de Ocotlan today, Antonius and I went over to Librería Giron to peruse the cookbook section. Dave's is (was) just west of the bookstore and I'm sorry to say that they are no longer in business. :( I hope some other ice place will be supplying tamarindo this summer...

Just finished a Chocolate Boston Shake from Scooter's Custard, my second trip to Scooter's in 2 days. It seems like they have changed their serving containers since last summer and they seem a tad smaller but still plenty for a good serving. I really like the Brownie Sundae where they mix real brownie pieces in. They were doing a land office business this evening!

I thought I'd break my non-posting streak and chime in on the ice cream topic since it happens to be my favorite thing EVER. Mr. EC (I am Ms. EC, BTW) knows that if given the opportunity, I will plow through a pint in one sitting.

    Miami Flavors - 2504 W. Division
Went there on a lark one afternoon and tried the avocado and tomato ice creams. The owner of the place is super friendly. Tasted like really good and creamy soft serve, but I could barely make out the flavors. If Penguin is too gritty in texture for you, try Miami Flavors.

    Bunny Hutch - 3650 W. Devon
I believe they still only have soft serve but you can make your own sundaes with sprinkles and syrup, etc.

Cyd and D'pano - Excellent gelato and if I remember correctly, they have a lot of choices.

    Angel Food Bakery - 1636 W. Montrose
Heard a rumor that she's going to start serving ice cream. Whee!

    Anna Held Flower Shop/Fountain Cafe - 5557 N. Sheridan
Why I have never been to this place, I have no idea. I hear it's an old school soda fountain and it's in that great pink building on Sheridan.

Miami Flavors is failrly well documented here. I like it lots, but it does closely follow the Carribean model of ice cream, which is dissimilar to other types. Soft, full of condensed milk and fast-melting. Some of the flavors are subtle, I think, because the fruits themselves are subtle (avocado, mamey, guanabana, papaya, etc). More to the point, Miami Flavors is no longer at the address you mention. A "for Rent" sign is up. Someone, I believe Cathy, mentioned a possible new location.

Miami Flavors is/was cool. Bunny Hutch, now that's a place I'd only go on a "lark."

I bumped into Robert at the Ed Levine Pizza talk in April. He's moving to a new location. I will have to search around where I put those notes especially since he gave me his e-mail address. Otherwise Papa's chicken across the street seems to have a good handle on what's occuring in the neighborhood.

MikeG had also alerted us on Miami Flavors moving in March.
