Just a reminder: The Purple Pig's GNR is up for renewal. Opinions about whether or not it should be renewed should be posted in the GNR thread, Purple Pig - A Pork and Vegetarian Delight. Non-GNR discussion should remain here.

Thinking about going on wednesday and trying to time it with the metra trains. Any thoughts on the wait time at 6:30-7 on a weeknight?

    Thanks, Will

How many people? You can usually get a seat at the bar, but the tables fill up pretty fast, even on weeknights.

We will be 5 people, one is 19 so the bar is out (I assume). Should have mentioned that.

    Thanks, Will

Most of the seating is communal tables with tall chairs, hope you're OK with that.

They have a few tables at a banquette but for parties of 2 and 4. And about half of the available seating right now is tables outside.

Is sitting at the bar verboten for the underaged? Seems to me the whole place is treated the same, food- and drink-wise.

Thinking about trying Purple Pig this Sunday around 5ish with wife and our 2 kids (12&10). We can be there as early as 3:30 to put our names on. How long should we expect to wait?

I would suggest you go and put your name in at 4, then take a walk if you want to eat at 5. Waits are always long, even if it's mid week, even if the weather is terrible.

Can we request for non-communal table or is it whatever comes available first?

You can request but it will take as long as it takes for that option to open for the number of seats you need. So could be longer...

Somehow the communal tables at PP don't bother me nearly as much as they do at other places. Not sure why.

Milz50: thanks for the far more detailed information. This sounds like a pretty serious matter, and the Eater piece left out the critical information about Jimmy Bannos Sr.'s apparent financial problems, which point to motive. This will be interesting to watch from a legal standpoint, as there are some big-name players involved.

Thanks also to Milz50 for the link to a far more coherent report.

I'm still curious to hear from employees, current and/or former about the time card reductions and the like. There are a bunch of waiter 'rant' sites that I don't follow.

Thinking about meeting a friend from "across the pond" there tomorrow, Monday night. Are the crowds still terrible? Is the food still great?

The crowds are worse than ever. We recently tried going there at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon, thinking that would be an off hour, and the wait was 90 minutes. We went to Bandera instead, and walked right in.

I go there for lunch on weekdays and haven't had a problem when arriving ~10 minutes before they open.

Monday evening at 7pm was a 45 minute wait for a 2 top.
By 8:30-9:00, you could walk right in.

Hopefully the new space inspires them to stop sexually harassing their employees.

Unrelated to food, but related to Purple Cow -- the original poem about the purple cow was published in 1895 by Gelett Burgess. Most people have heard his original but not the follow-up: "Yes, I wrote the Purple Cow. I'm sorry now I wrote it. But I can tell you anyhow, I'll kill you if you quote it." :)

The Purple Cow was an icecream joint on south Western Ave. back in the day.
South Side. Around 104th or 105th. Had a purple cow statue (around the size of the cows that graced the loop a few years back) up on the roof. The statue was stolen at some point which was rather scandalous in the neighborhood.

My guess is that the wait times will be very much the same, but since they've expanded, they'll be making a lot more money while you wait.
