Had lunch at Manny's on Saturday. Pastrami was ok, corned beef was packed with flavor and was really enjoyable, best CB I've had a Manny's yet.

Free cookie coupons from the to-go area were being given out, a smaller version than the dinner plate size cookies on sale there. Cookies were not good at all.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

I have to get back there. Been a few years after a 10 year period when I ate there every weekday when the Raskins were our landlords down the street.

I wonder if they still do the oxtail stew. Tender meat and a killer gravy with carrots, celery, onions & potatoes. At that time it was the most expensive thing on the menu at $13.95, and it was worth every penny.

I'd also try some kishke, and then for home I'd have Gino make me up a combo pastrami/CB on a Kaiser. (And then maybe the paddles... 8) ) Never was a big fan of the potato latkes--I like the Bagel's better.

Last time I was here I had the oxtails and was very happy. Believe the price has gone up but still well worth it.

I owed my lawyer lunch for a recent settlement he got me against a certain client that stiffed me last yr. He also happens to be my oldest eating partner going back to the early 60's. After his grandfather's funeral, we skipped out a little early to get back to his aunts for shiva and demolished a smoked fish tray meant for 20 pp in 15 mins between the 2 of us before anyone else got there. With that in mind I suggested Manny's to try their smoked fishes (a reoccurring theme w/us) no steam table would be involved.

Moist and delicious peppered sable and nova were the stars, beating out the chubs by a fin, which were good but not in the same league. A few toasted bagels, some whipped chive cream cheese w/sides of capers, red onion, tomatoes, cukes, Dr Brown's black cherry and 3 of us were in food bliss for $50. A much needed niche filled, making for a few deliriously satiated Jews.

Went for Friday night dinner a couple Fridays ago, both corned beef & pastrami were meh, just not a lot of flavor. Should have gone with the short rib dinner.

I'm not sure how much longer they can stay in business for dinner, besides Mrs Willie & myself, at 6pm there were 6 others in the entire restaurant. I hope they do, Mrs Willie & I like stopping in for dinner prior to concerts at Northerly Island or when in the area during dinner prime time as it is easy to park & get in/served.

I used to think Manny's was the end all be all for this type of food, but then I had Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and it basically ruined all the warm feelings I had for Manny's.

I now describe Manny's as "pretty good alternative when you aren't going to be in Indy anytime soon".

LOL - I've often referred to Shapiro's as the best deli in Chicago.

    Thanks, Joan, you too!

There was a separate KC board but it went away with the redesign. I lost the time to effectively maintain content many years back, but many (though not all) of the old posts were absorbed into this board and live on in the Kansas City index.

i've tried the corned beef @costco from manny's and i was not impressed. i had to wonder if they are offering an inferior cut, or maybe the steam setup at the deli improves the flavor...but i didnt feel like buying it again, and i love the corned beef at manny's....has anyone else had the same experience???

Tune into Diners, Drive in’s and Dives next Friday night (8/10/18) as our favorite Mustang driving Bro, Guy Fieri, drives on down to Flavorshtetl and features Manny’s. This should be interesting.

I’m not sure what to think about this, but I’ll be watching.

Darn it all! It's become a go-to since a friend had her birthday there last spring.

Perfect place to stop and have a cup of coffee and a slice of pie or cake if you are meeting someone. And the coffee is good! So is the egg salad sandwich on slightly toasted white.

It actually was a very well-filmed segment. The cabbage rolls and pastrami looked fabulous, and truth be told Fieri was at his charming best. The Raskins no doubt are thrilled.

Manny's with the bride for Thursday dinner.

Oxtail and marinated mushrooms for her. Half pastrami matzo ball soup, kasha varnishkes and watermelon for me. Washed down with Mexican Coke and Dr. Brown’s.

I was always a BIG fan of Manny's since the first time I set foot in this venerable deli.
As of yesterday, it had been several years since I had eaten there ( I have moved an hour away from the city); I was very excited about having their hot Pastrami on rye (dreamed about it the night before!), and saying hello to Gino, The Master Manny's Sandwich Maker. Sadly, Gino was not there, and is now "semi-retired" and is manning the meat slicer only on Wednesday through Saturday. Maybe it was best he wasn't there?
Unfortunately, my expectations were not met that day.

The sandwich was generous of the Pastrami, and the rye bread was fresh as a daisy; however, the meat lacked the usual garlicky, peppery, briny flavor; the Kosher pickles, which I have always delighted in, didn't have any of the usual garlic flavor that made them so special. The potato pancake was just ok, though it seemed to almost be an afterthought on their part- rubbery/chewy, without the usual crispy edges.
As a result, I will not go out of my way to visit Manny's anytime soon- I will keep my warm memories of its gloried past intact.

If you're jonesing for an incredible Kosher deli sandwich, I highly recommend Kaufman's Bagel & Delicatessen on Dempster in Skokie. The place sparkles, and there's a fresh snap to all the food products I have sampled there. Sometimes the line for service can be interminably long- but it's worth the wait. I love the fact that you can order your corned beef in three different levels of lean to fatty (fat's where the flavor is!); their pickles are fantastic-redolent of garlic. Though they don't serve a potato pancake with their sandwiches, their varied selection of kettle chips are a worthy accompaniment. Their tongue sandwich is also heavenly.
