It's been a while since I've come here; been away, am back. I live, work and eat in the city for the most part but am meeting a friend in downtown Arlington Heights for dinner. I've never been to this part of Suburbland, and would like some options before I go.

Well-made food of any cuisine (though I don't know the dining partner's tastes, so perhaps on the safe side?), seasonal would be nice, a nice wine list/stems would be a plus. Or just a decent light food/beer place.

City equivalents that would seem to work: Hopleaf, Quartino, Anteprima, Mas (though maybe that's too loud?), Adobo Grill, Renga Tei, Spacca Napoli, Spoon Thai, Frontera Grill, any of the decent French bistros in town.

Thanks for any assistance. There's a "downtown" to A.H.?

The tapas place there used to be solid, but it's been a few years since I have been. (As good as Twist, almost as good as Iberico used to be)

Stick to the tapas and sangria, though.

Latasca is a great tapas place. Porbably as good as or better than any tapas in Chicago. The Patatas Bravas are really good.

Francesca's Tavola is a place, maybe the only place downtwon A.H., that fits your crtieria. It's about two blocks south of downtown A.H. proper. Good food.

Alt Thai is my favorite suburban Thai place...I think it surpasses the other two Thai places in AH.

It's no Frontera, but Fuego is a great Mexican place...actually, it's my favorite suburban Mexican place.

La Tasca is great as well....so any of those and you'll be set.

Agree completely with Alt-Thai suggestion ... and it is reasonably priced.

I would add my vote for Alt Thai, Takkatsu, and La Tasca.

In addition to the link Jay K posted, there's a 30+ post Takkatsu thread with pictures, on LTHforum.

Its been a few years since I've been there, as well, but I'd have to third (fourth? fifth?) La Tasca for tapas. Cute, intimate (assuming they haven't moved), and very good tapas.

I've been to Alt Thai and it's pretty good. Not the best Thai place in the Chicago area, but decent.

I've also been to La Chicanita, on Dunton, for Mexican food. It's a very conventional Mexican place. Again, not the best, but decent.

If you have a car, I would suggest meeting your friend at Flamingo's Seafood in Mount Prospect (next town over from Arlington Heights) for extremely creative Mexican seafood, as described in detail in this previous topic. It's awesome, more impressive IMHO than Adobo Grill.

Renovations are underway to convert the former Dunton House in Arlington Heights into Bird's Nest, a chicken wing restaurant and sports bar that has had a location in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood since 1995.
