Have been working in the chow rich Montclair neighboorhood latley, one of our favorite lunch spots has been this sausage and sub shop which has been in business since 1947.

On a scale of 1 to 11 (with Bari being an 11) the subs here are a solid 9.5. Had to wait in line behind 8 CPD tactical officers at lunch yesterday( as we all know, these guys are never wrong  )

Took home a lb of the hot sausage with seeds and a jar of the house brand giardinaire. Sausage is excellent.Just enough heat to let you know its there without muting the flavor of the pork and other spices.
Giardinaire was good and hot with flakes of crushed red chile and oregano floating in it.

    JSM:

Thanks for the tip. Amata and I have noticed the place on some of our trips to the west to seek out Italian bakeries but always only after having just left Riviera (just around the corner, more or less); we haven't yet checked it out but will do so forthwith.

I've tried Nottoli on several occasions. I think that their bread really pales in comparison to Riviera.

I like their meatball subs though.

Your description of the sausage is spot on. It's definitely got some kick to it. BUt it's not a one trick pony, it's packed with real flavors.

Classic deli style Italian Beef sandwich. I’ve been jonesing for one for a while. A different sandwich than from stands or chains.

Tender and not overcooked beef, flavorful and beefy juice, great fresh bread and a nice variety of sweet peppers with a little onion. We got the 9”.

We also picked up a wheel of Italian sausage too.

Turns out the roast beef in the deli case and on subs is the same beef as on the IB.

    Great atmosphere and staff!

The original location was at Chicago and Hamlin. The location on Harlem is related only in name, the father sold the rights to use it. No connection in recipes or food.

Can’t recommend the Breaded Steak as the thin meat was overcooked and very tough. :( My Westside quest for BS :) continues.

I tried to find a spot for this but the moderators can put it where they wish.
Picked up a party tray of Classico sub sandwhiches Sunday morning for the Super Bowl.
Individual 2" pieces with a pretty toothpick sticking out to keep them whole.
Only day of the year Nottoli is open on Sunday is the Super Bowl.
Excellent selection of meats and cheese with Volpi Salami, Prosciutto Cotto, Hot Capicollo, Mortadella, Imported Provolone, hot or mild Giardiniera on the Classico.
Had the hot and mild Giardiniera put into containers for people to add their own.
The stronger taste of the imported Provolone really adds to the taste, I think.
You can if you wish purchase a loaf of the bread, order what you like and make your own but they do such great job.
Also picked up Braciole and Arancini spinach filled, the favorite of Inspector Montalbano. with a quart of Vodka sauce for another day.
They do have a Drive Up Window but the parking infront is not restricted, so most of the time you end up walking a half block or so due to the conjested parking. The window for pre orders is useful when they are busy as the line snakes around the small store interior.
Strictly old school store and shopping but the results are well worth the effort.
    No surcharge for Debit cards.
They have many types of Italian Sausage and we have settled on the 'Hot' being the best for us. In truth the Extra Hot is not that hot and I believe they also have a version with ground fennel for those that don't like the seeds.
Ordered a small Italian beef to eat in my vehicle.
The beef was tender slices, strong Oregano flavor and surprisingly good heat with a quarter dip. That still did not stop me from being sloppy and I ate half until the drippage over whelmed me and I packed it back up.
In truth, one of the most flavorful Italian Beef's I have ever had.

At my previous office gig of 20+ years, we had a catered "beef sammich" lunch every few months. One time, someone spoke up and suggested Nottoli over our usual Portillos (only because of ease vs quality - they know what they are doing, and they are generally not BAD.)

Needless to say, Nottoli got all of our business for "beef days" for about ten years. Fantastic stuff, and a better value.

We had the Braciole and Arancini last night with the Vodka sauce.
The Braciole was tender, almost a ball of beef, strong garlic and flavorful.
This is not your Olive Garden type Italian food.
Arancini was wonderful fried ball of tender rice with a spinich/cheese interior.
Along with the vodka sauce, could not have had better combination.
Note: there are three heats of Italian sausage with fennel seeds.
    Mild, Hot and XXX Hot.
The XXX Hot is really no problem if you like spice but I think we have settled on the Hot for now as the best for our preparations.
BTW The Inspector Montalbano books and episodes are about an Italian Detective and his love life and food likes which are interwoven in the episodes.
If you want find them to watch, they are very entertaining.

A quick note: we had the Hot Italian sausage with Angel Hair and the Vodka sauce last night.
The Hot had just the right amount of heat and was delicious.
I purchase 5#'s at a time and the rest is in the freezer.
I have the local Tenuta's in Kenosha and they have a much larger selection of goods but the prepared Notolli foods are outstanding.
