Learning the techniques involved in breaking down and utilizing a whole pig head in-person was pretty invaluable

Have you all been going to Friday fish frys? If so where, and how was it?

I ask but I also must disclose that, I run one at 75th and main, twice during lent. Feb 19th and again on March 26th. http://www.stekc.org/fish.htm

Last weekend I went one out in Western Shawnee at Sacred Heart. It was only $8 and $4 for kids, and several good things on the extensive list off items served. My problem with it was two fold. First, no beer and second, they had so many different things on the menu. They were trying to be every thing to everyone and the focus was not there on anyone item. 3 different types of fish, they weren't bad just that it wasn't great. If you are in that area, worth going to, but don't drive in for it.

I want to know about other frys around town.

This is a fun topic! The Catholic church down the hill from us (Holy Name in Rosedale) has a sign up advertising meatless Mexican meals on Friday evenings. Their annual fundraising dinner is pretty kickass Mexican homecooking, so this is something I have been eyeing.

The Archdiocese of KCK had this list of fish fries posted on its website:

We went to the one at St. Agnes in Roeland Park last year. Beer was plentiful, fish was okay.

I know my in-laws have taken the kids to the one at St. Joe's in Shawnee, which I gather is something of a spectacle. We may hit it up this year.

I know this isn't technically a "fish fry" in the true sense of the word, but a great Lenten special is being put on at Oklahoma Joe's. They've had the soft-shell crab sandwich and seafood gumbo for awhile now, but this year a new item has shown up. A fried fish Z-man.

It's compiled like this:

bottom bun
spicy remoulade sauce
batter dipped fried fish filet (not some frozen store bought kind)
provolone cheese
2 onion rings
BBQ sauce
top bun

They only serve it on Fridays, so I thought it bore mentioning. If you like a good fish sandwich, this one is simply amazing. I turned my nose up at it initially, but tried one, and was floored.

A fried fish Z-man, sounds great! I will try that Friday for lunch.

Thanks for the KCK fish fry link. I will look into St. Joe's too.

I've heard good things about the OK Joe's sandwich.

Tower Tavern on 31st/Oak has wonderful fish sliders on Friday's. Smaller, fried filet, cheese and a red pepper/tartar/aioli type of sauce.

Started out last year as a lent special, but they now serve them year-round

Funny turn of thread. I had a shrimp po' boy at Sol Cantina today that was much better than I expected, a very pleasant if squishy ciabatta, tomato and lettuce fresher than I would have thought, crunchy sweet shrimp and a nice sauce. No need to run out and get it, but if you're in the neighborhood, it's not a bad option.

More on topic, the friend I had lunch with said the Cure' of Ars shrimp dinner is this Friday, and he said it's usually a pretty good feast.

I went back to City Fish http://www.cityfishandmore.com/ at 27th and State Ave. for the first time in a long while. Man was that good, the catfish was perfect, cornmeal coated and not grease at all. I have never had better okra. The Hot sauce was good, and spicy. I got the #2- 3/4lb of catfish and 2 sides.

So, we went to the shrimp night at St. Joe's in Shawnee this past weekend, and it was pretty darn good. I believe they went through 500 pounds of shrimp...it was a busy night. I think the price was $13 for adults, though I got there after tickets were purchased so I'm not 100% sure. My plate must have had a pound of shrimp, a good helping of corn, green beans, boiled potatoes, roll, and a side salad with iceberg lettuce, generous green olives, and a peppery Italian dressing. I really enjoyed everything. The shrimp were sweet and meaty, even the salad was way better than you'd expect. Beer wasn't included, but was only $6 for a pitcher, and the room was lively. Plus, the Knights of Columbus have a pretty sweet bar area built off the parish hall. It seemed to me, given the scope of the event, that this was a once/Lent event, but apparently they do it every week before Good Friday, so you've got one more week to check it out.
