Looking for low-key (non ramen/sushi) Japanese...

Whenever we go get Japanese food, we always end up getting sushi, or ramen. I would love to go and try some more casual, low-key Japanese foods that normal Japanese people might eat on a more regular basis.... I read about Renga-Tai, but I was hoping to find something closer to Chicago (we live in Avondale). Does anyone have any suggestions for places to check out?

Post #5 - January 19th, 2018, 11:52 amFutatsuki Ramen in Uptown offers several other izakaya dishes in addition to ramen. I personally love their chicken karaage and their katsu curry.
Kizuki Izakaya has izakaya dishes in addition to ramen.
I miss Sumi Robata/Charcoal Bar they had some great izakaya dishes.
