OK, I finally had a free day for lunch so I called a buddy and we headed back to Laymon's for their world famous sausage burger. We had a choice of a beef, pork, or turkey. Based on their recommendation, we picked the pork, which tasted like a standard breakfast sausage, but was actually really tasty when combined with grilled onions and BBQ sauce. Grabbed a pepsi out of the vending machine and sat down for lunch at the one rickety plastic table. (Good thing it wasn't occupied or we'd be eating on the car hood again...)
The photo doesn't show it, but there were actually TWO burger-sized sausage patties stacked together, and although it wasn't exactly "smothered in onions" as advertised, there were enough to add flavor. The BBQ sauce was way too sweet for my taste, but kept everything moist and tasty. All in all, with fries included, a really good deal and a lot of food for $3.50.
We also tried the tips/links combo, which was equally generous. The sauce really helped the links, which were nicely charred but a little dry. The tips were decent, but not as much smoke flavor as I'd like. In fact we didn't really smell any smoke until we were ready to leave--they must have been firing up the dinner batch.
I'd give Laymon's a moderate thumbs up for respectable authentic chicago westside eats. Now iIf they could give the sauce a bit more wang, I think it would take things up a notch.
