St. Mary of the Annunciation (Fremont Center, Mundelein) Pork and Corn Roast, is August 7, starting at 11AM.

I have been going for a long time. It is a VG event. In the past it has been 2 days. I don’t know why they are not having anything on the 8TH.

    Hi,

According to the church bulletin, the gates open at 4 pm on Saturday. Food is served from 4:30 until 7:30 pm. Meal tickets are $10 per adult; $4 for 5-10 year old and those 4 and under are free.

Were you at the pig roast last year? Did you like how they rearranged the physical layout of the event? We had always sat under the trees in the front. Last year, everyone was obligated to use the tent, now located at the far end. I have a call in to see what can be expected this year.

One thing missing last year was the Country Store with the lady selling corn and home baked goods. This has returned.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I guess I messed up the starting time. I got an email from a friend and that is what he had.

    Their web site http://dev.stmaryfc.org/CommunityMinist ... fault.aspx
    shows this:

36th Annual Pork and Corn Roast
    Start Date/Time: Saturday, August 07, 2010 2:00 PM
    End Date/Time: Saturday, August 07, 2010 11:00 PM

I was there last year on the 2nd day and I noticed the change layout too. I can’t remember if it was a problem for us. I guess I just adapted.

Do you know why they are not having it on Sunday? In the past didn’t they have entertainment Saturday night?

I have always enjoyed this event.

    Hi,

Last year it was Saturday only. We went last year, though I wondered if people showed up Sunday to learn they missed it.

I have a feeling you may not have been there last year, because the whole layout was reworked. It did not have the local church dinner feel to it. All the seating was shoved to the rear of the lot to a tent. No more eating under the trees. No longer picking up food near the cinderblock kitchen where the food is cut up. Instead it was carted to the tents.

I come often with people who have limited mobility. While I arranged for a golf cart ride to the tent. In the past, this was not needed because everything was nearby. The lack of a bake sale also dimmed our spirits, though at least this has been remedied.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Wow you are right. I guess the mind is a terrible thing to waste. For some reason I thought I went on a Sunday. If I can trust my memory I remember I thought it seemed like a slimmed down version of prior years.

Bottom line it is VG eats and I assume it helps a good cause. I recommend people give this event a try.

    Hi,

I have inherited projects filled with traditions. It is always risky to radically overhaul without people complaining.

Unless there were issues one could not see at the Pig Roast, it always seemed like a well oiled machine with everyone knowing what to do. The breadth of change didn't seem all that necessary from my perspective as a casual participant.

I plan to go this year and hope for the best.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    HI,

I bumped into the manager for the St. Mary's Corn and Pork Roast today a the Lake County Fair. It was dumb luck running into him, though his corn and pork roast t-shirt certainly hinted at his association.

I learned they are once again bringing picnic tables under the trees in the front. I was not the only one who felt it had lost its country picnic character when everyone was obligated to eat under the tent.

The food will still be served in the tents on the north end, but not near the screened in kitchen. I learned the change of location had to do with the septic field. Too many people and vehicles in the area were affecting it.

The Moms are not big walkers. I learned they will send runners to obtain their food from the north side. I can simply take of them myself, though it is good to know of other options.

I inquired how long the pigs are cooked, they said 12 hours. I commented I have seen similar sized pigs cooked for a lot less time. He said they prefer, "Low and slow."

AFter swearing off my attendance because of all the recent changes, I am now on board to visit next Saturday.

You may want to get up there a little earlier to visit the Lake County Discovery Museum, which is maybe 10 miles west of St. Mary's. Their exhibit on Civil War High Tech is closing August 21st.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Hi,

It would have been the weekend after the Lake County Fair. It was probably this last weekend. I was out of town both weekends.

Sorry, I did not refresh everyone's memory on this.

    Hi,

I just went through their website and church bulletin, it appears the answer is no. I passed the church less than a week ago and did not see any advertising.

I prefer to remember as how I first encountered it: eating on benches under the trees in front. It was a lovely event in the country.

A great day for this event. They served a good pile of pork, beans, red potato salad, corn on the cob, and sliced tomatoes. The pork was outstanding, some of the best I've ever had. The sides were very good, except for the beans. They were ok.

They weren't as generous as they used to be with the serving size. But I bought extra corn at $1 per piece, a reasonable price. They said it was Mirai, and it tasted sweet.
