In honor of Ramadan (although perhaps it is an odd honor, given that tradition), the Evanston Lunch Group will descend on Zad, the new, more entree-oriented restaurant from the folks at Pita Inn. Zad is in the old Pita Inn space on Dempster. We are meeting on Wednesday May 16th (the first day of Ramadan, which begins the night before) at 12:30. The staff at Zad tell me that they are open 365 days/year, including Christmas, Yom Kippur, as well as Ramadan.

I’ve been wanting to try Zad, so it looks like now is a good time. Thanks for choosing and planning this.

Count me in, my first Wednesday free after my class at OCC is over. Wanted to go to Burmese but I'm leading a culinary group at a different restaurant that day. If you don't know me, check with Cathy2.

Bumping the announcement for Wednesday lunch.

I have made a reservation for 8. The reservation should be under "Gary"

Happy Ramadan! (If you are devout, you won't be joining us for lunch, but we wish you a holy and peaceful month).

I'd like to attend but my schedule won't allow it.

Have been to Zad twice in the last month and liked it.

    Enjoy!

OK, so I'm a newbie and I don't know the cultural traditions of LTH. I took pictures at the lunch. Should I post any of them here? Pictures of the food? Pictures of the people?

I, and often others, post pix of the food, and, pix or no, all are encouraged to comment on the meal and the experience. I haven't posted pictures because I've been fairly busy — feel free to post your if you like.

For the record, I was impressed overall. The food was better than I expected. It seemed a little more upscale than Pita Inn. I particularly liked the interestingly-spiced Chicken Kefta, and the many layers of flavor in the Fatet Makdous (eggplant casserole) w. Beef.

And, an added bonus is the Pita Inn Marketplace next door — a great source for their house-made pitas, as well as a wide variety of otherwise somewhat-hard-to-find Mediterranean foods.

Usually the food is what we want to look at, not so much the people. :D

It is true that - typically - the food is more attractive than those who consume it. But there is no accounting for taste!

I was also impressed by the food at Zad's. More than I expected to be. I, too, liked the chicken kefta.
