I found a can of sweetened condensed milk that "expired" on 12/2/16. How long past a date can you go?

I wouldn't go more than a decade or two past the date, as long as the can's in good shape.
NPR wrote:Canned food, in particular, can stay safe for a really long time. In 1974, scientists at the National Food Processors Association in Washington, D.C., got their hands on several old cans of food.

Janet Dudek, now semi-retired and living in Vienna, Va., was among the scientists who analyzed this old food. Her assignment was a can of corn, vintage 1934, that was found in someone's basement in California.

When they opened the can, Dudek says, the contents looked and smelled pretty much like ordinary canned corn. Analysis showed that it had most of the usual complement of nutrients — although there were lower levels of a few, such as vitamin C.

Results were similar for century-old canned oysters, tomatoes and red peppers in cans recovered from a sunken steamboat, buried in river silt near Omaha, Neb.

Hi Pie Lady- I just looked it up, and the eat by date website I consulted said that sweetened condensed milk is good for at least a year after the use by date. I had a lot of canned tomatoes I got dirt cheap at the Dominick's going out of business sale, and I used a few cans this last winter, but I had at least one can I ended up pitching, It was okay to eat, but did not taste that great.

I bought a bag of frozen cherries and defrosted them in the fridge. Took 'em out to eat, didn't eat 'em, put 'em back in. Removed 'em another day, same deal. In, out, in out. Today, the bag is puffed as far as it will go. Apparently they're good until 6/2018 or -19, but I assume if they stay frozen. What's the verdict? Will I induce a botulistic death?

I bought two big cod fillets on Thursday (pretty sure it was Thursday) and promptly forgot about 'em. I have them wrapped in the same butcher paper, shoved way in the back of the fridge. Sell-by date of today. I will definitely cook them today! Or should I just buy new ones and give the current ones a proper burial?

Pie Lady--trust your nose when it's about fish. Take them out of the wrapper, give them a quick, light wash in cold water, dry them off, and smell. If you get anything 'unfresh' in their aroma, throw them out. If not, I'd eat 'em.

I recommend the quick wash because it's frequently the case that the outside layer of liquid has gone off a bit, while the flesh itself is perfectly fine. Your nose can easily smell the difference.

    Best o' luck!

    2 notes:

On October 25th I ate a cup of Greek yogurt with 'best used before' date of July 24th. So, far no signs of illness or death.

On October 20th, I bought a Muffaletta at Central Grocery in New Orleans. I let it sit out, without refrigeration, in my hotel room for 3 days, after which I packed it in my backpack, brought it home and ate it on October 24th. Again, no signs of illness or death but more importantly, it was delicious! Aged Muffaletta . . . count me a fan!

Why did you age your eats so thoroughly, Ronnie??! :?

Two comments. First, the yogurt "best before" is a taste-warning, not a safety warning, IMHO. Yogurt is already-spoiled milk.
Secondly, IIRC the Central Grocery muff, it's got nothing more spoilable than the cold cuts; the olive salad won't spoil, nor will the provolone. The cold cuts will go off ultimately, but who knows when?? Could be days and days.

You probably also have a cast-iron stomach, too!

Well, the yogurt was not on purpose; poor inventory management on my part. But when I opened it, it appeared fine, so I ate it. I think with something like this, it's probably very apparent if it's gone bad.

Exactly . . . I knew it'd be better on Day 2 for sure and probably on Day 3, too. After that, I was just hoping it would work out, which it seems to have. When I got home, it was that one final taste of NOLA, which really did me right.

It's probably safe but unless it's been immaculately packed it's also very likely to be freezer-burned and taste pretty bad at this point. On that basis alone, I'd probably opt out.

I'm with Ronnie: I see absolutely no way that that sausage could do anything but drag the gumbo down (and this from a guy who vacuum packs and keeps his freezer at -10°F !)

If you can't get more fresh andouille, the get the most rustic, garlicky Polish sausage you can find. It'll be pretty decent substitute.

Natural honey, unopened jar, over 20 years old. Blackberry honey from Colts Neck Honey Shop, NJ. No signs of crystallization, has been kept for the most part in the far back of a cabinet.

says "HONEY, PURE, LIQUID, COMMERCIALLY BOTTLED" and this was sold at a store, but it doesn't seem to be like the stuff you get in the grocery store - sterilized, etc. It was from a local apiary and I'm guessing it's raw honey.
