FRancis, the dog, of Cooking with Dog:

Our host Francis passed away this afternoon. He was 14 years and 9 months old and lived a full, happy life. Over the past 9 years, he was loved by viewers all over the world and we would like to thank you for your kindness and support. Francis was the happiest dog we have ever met and he brought us so many good memories. He was a good friend and will be missed.

They were located in Highland Park behind the Police Station for years. I know more about this guy and company since his death, than anytime before. Of course, that is why I like reading obits, you learn so much and often wished you met them.

I remember the Solo Cup factory in HP, by the police station. (I think there was a good Chinese restaurant near there too? I can still picture the brick building and pink neon sign.) I think my sister and some of her high school friends worked at the Solo Cup factory. There was also a Solo Cup factory in Urbana when I lived there in the 80's/90's.

Mr. Larson was a farmer in Hinckley, IL, who got his start in 1941. Lots of interesting detail on how he became a farmer and the economics. One rather amusing story about a favorite uncle, which is rather fantastic.

Howard C. Larson, originally wrote this obituary when he was 93 years old and made needed modifications to it as years passed. Howard died peacefully at home at 97.

Razbry posted this on facebook, but it certainly meets our criteria for an interesting obituary.

Ms. Lewis was no doubt ahead of her times with the gourmet burger thing, which I thought was quasi-ludicrous back in the early 1990's when I'd frequent the Hamburger Hamlet in Glenview near Lake & Waukegan. But I kept going back. Excellent burger at the time, good store, have missed it for the last 20+ years.

Levon Demerdjian, ran Armenian restaurants, dies at 80

The first of the restaurants —all called Sayat Nova for a famous Armenian poet and musician — was on Sheridan Road near Loyola University's Lake Shore Campus. The second still operates on Ohio Street off Michigan Avenue and is run by a nephew. The third was started by Levon Demerdjian in Des Plaines.

I ate at that spot once, on Golf just west of Mount Prospect Road. It had the layout of a former gas station or convenience store, but kofta made for a great lunch. It's been a hot dog stand called "Johnnie's Place" for years.

Beatrice Trum Hunter, a Brooklyn-born public school teacher who transplanted herself in midlife to a sylvan sanctuary, where she compiled what was heralded as the nation’s first healthful natural foods cookbook, died on Wednesday in Hillsborough, N.H. Having practiced what she preached, Mrs. Hunter lived to be 98.

I'm proud of this long-time and long-lived University of Illinois professor and sad to learn of his passing:

Fred A. Kummerow, an Early Opponent of Trans Fats, Dies at 102

He may well have been the person most responsible for getting trans fats banned from processed foods in the US.
