    Hi,

Running around the Midwest judging at state fairs, I have met a number of interesting food people. One of the earliest introductions was Julianne Glatz who wrote for the independent paper Illinois Times of Springfield.

She was an early supporter of Greater Midwest Foodways. A joy to meet up and discuss food in Central Illinois and beyond. She never hesitated to jump in the car to drive anywhere there was interesting food.

I hadn't heard from her in a while, began to write an e-mail with the subject title, "Long time no hear." I impulsively decided to search from her name before proceeding. I sadly found her obituary.

Glatz became a near-instant institution after her weekly column began in 2006. She wrote about more than just recipes. Over the years, readers came to know her takes on the origins of food, her adventures fixing up the historic farmhouse where she lived with her husband Peter and that unforgettable Thanksgiving when the power went out. Her recipes tended toward the simple side, and that was by design.

What a lively and interesting lady who will be missed especially when I go to Springfield.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Novelist, poet, and food writer Jim Harrison has passed away.

Considered a master of the novella, a rarely cultivated discipline, Mr. Harrison was also known for his essays on food: he was perhaps the leading exponent of the small subgenre in which shotguns and shoe leather play a far greater role than balsamic reduction.

His food writing, much of which first appeared in Esquire, was collected in his 2001 book, “The Raw and the Cooked,” whose title invokes the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss’s volume of that name. Mr. Lévi-Strauss’s book is about myth and ritual. Mr. Harrison’s is about rituals that include his flying to France for the sole purpose of having lunch — a lunch that spanned 11 hours, 37 courses and 19 wines.

"The Raw and The Cooked" is one of my favorite food books ever. I would recommend it to anyone on this forum, unless you are a vegan.....it might be ok for a vegan with a sense of humor if there is such a thing. Harrison was a very interesting guy and a great writer.

Folks around here were sad to see Quig's Orchard close several years ago. And I'm still sad that Bell's Apple Orchard in Antioch is gone. But hey, I did find this: Bell's Apple Orchard to revive Long Grove Apple Haus concept.

William Zeigler, whom I do not know, though I admire his obituary:

William Ziegler escaped this mortal realm on Friday, July 29, 2016 at the age of 69. We think he did it on purpose to avoid having to make a decision in the pending presidential election. He leaves behind four children, five grand- children, and the potted meat industry, for which he was an unofficial spokesman until dietary restrictions forced him to eat real food.
    ...
Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but well-wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a Schaefer Light beer can and drink it in his honor. He was never one for sentiment or religiosity, but he wanted you to know that if he owes you a beer, and if you can find him in Heaven, he will gladly allow you to buy him another.

    Hi,

I remember watching her show. She was always moving a spoon in a pot, or at least that's what sticks in my mind.

Later I met someone who worked on her show. While she was well versed in the culture, she wasn't much of a cook. All the food was cooked by someone else, though Vertamae knew her food and culture.
