I bought a couple of these and had one as a snack last night while watching the VMAs. According to the sign in the picture, this was a mild chile, but it was quite a bit hotter than I expected (in a very good way). I'd put it at the mild jalapeño level.

My theory is that because of the drought conditions in the southwest, the chiles are running hot this year; similar to how drought conditions increase the sweetness of stone fruit.

    One reminder about "Hatch chiles".

Hatch refers to the town (in the middle of an area) that produces a lot of peppers.

The actual pepper can be one of any number of peppers grown in the area. The varieties include but are NOT limited to the NuMex, Big Jim, 6-4 among many others, many of which have been developed my New Mexico State University's internationally renowned Chile Pepper Institute.

The only way to really determine the variety of pepper is to purchase directly from the grower. You generally cannot get that info from the various supermarkets.

Geo made a good point. Peppers are notorious for cross pollinating with other varieties. The HOTTEST pepper I have ever tasted in my life were from some "sweet peppers" my MIL raised 20+ years ago.

You all just made my day! I'm so homesick for NM! I've been looking all over for hatch chile roasting. Does anyone remember what a case of chile was going for at Heinen's? I'm going to try to go to the next roast, but I'm newly relocated to a Chicago and still job hunting, so I can't go too chile crazy.

Thank you so much for the info!

    Hi,

Heinen's in Bannockburn will be roasting Hatch Chiles Sept 13 and 14 from 11 am to 5 pm.

A 25-pound* case costs $45 roasted and skinned.
Roasted and skinned chiles are $3.49 per pound
    Fresh chiles are $2.69

*I suggest having them weigh the box separately from the chiles. You don't want to pay the weight of this box.

The produce clerk advised it took less than 10 minutes per batch to roast.

I suggest calling in advance to order the heat level you prefer. When I bought hatch chiles in Kansas recently, there were only two cases of hot and the rest was milder.

    Regards,

As of last night there were still Hatch Chiles to purchase at Heinen's Bannockburn. FYI.

edited to add: a wonderful co-worker this morning brought in bags of both hot & normal which he had purchased last night. I did not ask how much more was left in the store.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

Hatch refers to the town of Hatch New Mexico and the season is in August.
Most likely from Mexico trading on the Hatch name.

    Hi,

I am leaving for my annual State Fair weekend on Thursday early.

I may be stopping in Kansas City, though it is possible I don't go. If I get there and (another if) they have Hatch Chiles, who would like some?

If there is an interest, I will call the produce manager at the HyVee where I bought them last.

Sorry for all the conditional statements, but that's what it is.

    Hi,

I didn't realize you were now far away. I do hope you will report on the local food scene whenever the spirit moves you.

    Laikom,

I didn't know the first time around as much as I do now about 'hot.' I had the impression they were all hot, which possibly they are by my (timid) standards.

This was a fantastic event last year. Cases were roasted while you wait, and smaller quantities of all heat levels (roasted or fresh) were available in the produce section. This was every bit as good as going to New Mexico to get them yourself.

    Hatch Chile Fest at Heinen's

What a great event. I think they must've had about 10 different tasting stations sampling different hatch chile creations available for purchase. Everything from cream cheese roll-up's to ceviche. They're also selling 1 pound cases of fresh roasted chiles inside as well as fresh ones. I got a case of da hots, roasted on-site, and will be cooking with them all week. Is there a more versatile vegetable out there? These chiles really seem to work great mixed into everything. That said nothing is better with them than a green chile cheeseburger. USA Today recently named New Mexico's Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail to be the best food trail in the US. This kind of made me think twice as I just chose a weekend in Maine as my next getaway having chosen the lobster rolls and water over the desert and cheeseburgers of New Mexico. Though I'm not stressing, I'll get to the Land of Enchantment eventually. In the meantime the Mississippi Delta Tamale Trail remains my favorite food trail experienced. I'm thinking green chile stew tomorrow.

The gods must be smiling upon us.

Heinen’s Hatch Chile Roasting Fest this weekend was terrific. The guys who were doing the roasting were just setting up on Sunday. As a result, I picked up a case of Super Hot grade chiles that were roasted on Saturday.

Being our Family Cynic, I tested one of the batch to make certain that they were truly the Super Hot grade. First impression: great charred-skin taste. Second impression: true green-chile flavor. Third impression: WTF!!! The flavor lasted (and my nose kept running) all the way from the parking lot in Glenview to within a block of home in Evanston.

I froze most of these in small bags for future use. Now, the trick will be to figure out how to use them without causing serious damage to internal organs.

Toward that end, perhaps the resident Chilehead LTHers can share some of their favorite recipes featuring seriously hot Hatch Chiles. What a wonderful world that would be.

Thanks so much for posting about this

I got there on Sunday and got one of the last cases of Hot, which they roasted for me while I shopped (and BTW - the store had Blueberry Unfrosted Poptarts).

I had called in and reserved it for late on Sunday afternoon, roasted. I now have a bunch of these frozen in bags like JimD. I made a quick cooked salsa for Chile Cheeseburgers cooked on the grill:

    Sautee in oil until wilted
    one onion chopped
    4 garlic cloves chopped
Toss one Tablespoon flour over this, and stir to combine well
    sautee for another minute
    Mix in
    2 cups chopped chile
    oregano, cumin, ground coriander
water or stock to moisten but not enough to make it soupy
Bring to boil, simmer for 10 minutes, turn off and let sit
    Leek

Not much different, really. Sunset's price is $2.99/lb. I presume that's for fresh unroasted chiles. IIRC, the flyer didn't mention doing roasting on site* or selling by the box at a lower price. Sunset is also selling some premade Hatch chile dishes: chile and cheese quesadilla, shrimp-stuffed chile relleno; I forget the other two.

The Heinen's prices shown in posts above are:

    --From this year's flyer: " 20 LB CASES FOR $45.99" = $2.30/lb

-- Last year's prices (Cathy2's post): A 25-pound* case costs $45 roasted and skinned. Roasted and skinned chiles are $3.49 per pound. Fresh chiles are $2.69. (Should that 25 lbs be 20 lbs?).

Best prices this year so far (posts by NFriday): unroasted $1.99/lb, Jewel in Wilmette, $1.49/lb, Fresh Market Edens Plaza.

*ETA: their website says "We're roasting chiles!", which is a little more information, not much. Oh, and the Hatch Chile Fest hours at those three locations are only 11 am to 1 pm.
