    If you have a Chicago library card, you can log on there with your card info and access it through their Online Resources.

    Sorry, I did not notice! But if you do have a library card from somewhere else, chances are they subscribe to some database where you can access WSJ and some other paywalled publications.

    It looks like if you access this through WSJ's Twitter post, you can read it for free.

    You can also access a selection of magazines, Saveur and Cook's Illustrated are a couple of the food ones I look at.

    Aldi's $7.99 rose appeared in stores on Wednesday morning, and in most stores it was sold out in just a few hours. Did anybody get it?

    I have to pay for access to Cook's they got me there. When I travel I like to cook and it is basically my library.

    But Saveur would be cool. I dropped my subscription years ago because I found I read it but never made anything from it. That may now be enough satisfaction for me but at renewal time it was not.

    I was in the Clybourn store before noon that day. Another woman wanted it. The staff said someone came in at opening bell and bought 15 cases. The staff also knew that the store on Clybourn north of Fullerton was also out.

    I suggested to the woman she try an Aldi's location where oenophiles were less apt to have rolled through already, perhaps west or south sides of the city.
    I used to do this whenever Targét rolled out a capsule collection with some high end designer. I would leave my neighborhood for Targéts elsewhere that I figured the fashionistas wouldn't hit at opening bell. I scored lots of Rodarte's collection that way.

    Somebody on Craig's List was selling the wine for $35 a bottle. I am surprised they let her buy 15 cases of it. I've heard that the wine was not that good either.

    Somebody mentioned on mashupmom that there was a limit of six bottles of wine at Aldi's, and so somebody did not enforce it.

    Well perhaps I misunderstood her. Perhaps she said 15 cases was all they had and they went in a blink of an eye.

    Starting tomorrow they will have...

    ... an enameled cast iron 1.75 qt sauce pan with cover for $15.

    ... an enameled cast iron 4.8 qt french (? dutch) oven with cover for $25.

    I bought the Dutch Oven version of that enamel clad cast iron cookware a couple of years back. Cost about $35 IIRC. It's served me well, but the enamel on the outside does show some wear and chipping where it meets the cast iron grate above my stove's burners. Is that typical of all enamel covered cast iron, or does the more expensive stuff (i.e. Le Creuset) resist chipping? If the chipping is consistent with pricier brands, then the ALDI version is a hell of a buy; about 1/10th the price of a similar model sold through Sur La Table.

    Stollen?

    Aldi isn't on any of my regular routes so it is a bit of a journey to get to one.

    When can I expect them to get the Stollen in? I'm ready for my fix!

    It has been there for several weeks already. What I have not yet seen are the STroopwafels, which I have enjoyed in Holland.

    Monica Eng made a passing referred to Aldi offering a Salmon Poke. I found it over the weekend as a limited time offering. I shared it with my Mom for breakfast, because that's how we roll!

    I have been enjoying an Aldi stollen (Winternacht from Germany) for the past two mornings. I have also seen the Salmon Poke in an Aldi in Cincinnati this past weekend in one location but not in the blue collar neighborhood.

    They also have a stolen that is by their Specialty brand which is in the black box. Its pretty good for store bought and better than the Deutsche Kueche which I never cared for. I have yet to try the Winternacht. Of course home made is best but sometime time and energy don't cooperate. I've also been looking for the marzipan bars coated in thin chocolate and have yet to see them.

    Monica Eng went into the various Aldi's in neighborhoods up and down the economic strata. She wanted to know if the organic food was available to all without discrimination to local economics, she found them in all.

    It would have been interesting to ask the store manager if the Poke had been at the blue collar neighborhood store.

    The two Aldi's I visit the most are Park City (next to Waukegan) and Carol Stream. At the Park City location, I can always find the German breads with seeds, which are cut very thin. I never find them at Carol Stream. When I asked the staff about it, they never saw what I was talking about.

    When I am in Park City next time, I will ask if they offered the Poke. I haven't been there much recently and it was a limited time item, so who knows.

    I think that Aldi store managers get a lot of say in what shows up in their stores. My Aldi in Kansas City had a lot of the German stuff--frozen schnitzels for example--that I never see in my upstate NY store.
    We noticed the same sorts of socio-ec variation in Costcos around Kansas City, and it's even more pronounced in Montréal (which has *seven* Costcos!!), where there still are ethnic neighborhoods.

    One thing I was surprised to see at my Aldi was shredded swiss cheese, it may have been emmanthaler or similar like Gruyere. Its sometimes hard to find pre shredded swiss if you are making a quiche or something. I use it because its a time saver. Ain't got no time to shred the swiss. Generally around the holidays Aldi ups their selection of cheeses overall as well.

    Aldi expands in-store bakery test to Illinois store
    Aldi has apparently extended its test of in-store bakeries in the U.S., adding an amenity it already offers in other countries and one that is already offered in the U.S. stores of rival Lidl.

    As reported this week on the website of Brick Meets Click, Aldi has opened an in-store bakery in a recently relocated store in Batavia, Ill., where the German-owned chain has its U.S. headquarters. The store has also been expanded by about 3,000 feet and remerchandised with fresh departments taking center stage.

    The relocated Aldi includes an organic produce display at the entrance, and produce and deli products occupying the entire first aisle, Brick Meets Click reported. Extensive new signage also calls attention to the fresh offerings, which also include fresh meat and seafood at the back of the store.

    The bakery appears to be configured in a similar way to those at Lidl, the German rival that made its debut in the U.S. last year with a larger store format that includes in-store bakeries.

    Like the bakeries at Lidl, the Aldi bakeries feature self-service cases that are stocked from behind, where items such as breads, doughnuts and pretzels are baked in-store, according to Brick Meets Click.

    Hi,

    One pet peeve I have at Aldi: if anything is marked down for fast sale, more than a few times a product was charged full price.

    There was a can of fruit cocktail with one price on the shelf and scanned 5 to 10 cents higher at check out. I pointed this out to the manager. A month later, I bought the same fruit cocktail and was charged again 5 to 10 cents higher at check out.

    I tend to read receipts before I leave. Every once in a while I don't and don't you know it, an errant price pops up.

    Hi,

    At the several Aldi's I visit, I notice ghee is now offered.

    The Aldi in Park City, 120 east of 41, will be closing later this summer. The crew will move to a new Aldi in Fountain Square area (120 west of 41) by the Walmart.

    If there is an Aldi in Libertyville, they wish to be near Menard's. Locals are making them jump hoops wishing for a better aesthetic than the conventional Aldi box store and traffic considerations.

    If they move to Libertyville, it will be convenient shopping with Jewel, Mariano's, Trader Joe's and Aldi in very close proximity and Costco just a few miles away.
