Tribune stated Moo and Oink is over 150 years old. Austin article indicates they have served the black community for 30 years. One of them is wrong, though I lean toward the Tribune as being mistaken.
How old is Moo and Oink?

Post #4 - August 10th, 2011, 12:50 pmIt turns out that a case can be made for both claims. On their history page, they claim that their wholesale company is over 150 years old, but also talk about opening a retail store and establishing their mascots (Moo & Oink) in 1977.Steve Z.

That history page seems to include some inaccuracies. Old ads for Calumet Meat (the precursor to Moo & Oink) say "Since 1935" or "Since 1939." I guess, as their website hints, there were even older precursors to Calumet. Also, the part about the mascots originating in 1977 is incorrect. Here's part of a Calumet Meat ad from 1975.
In earlier days Calumet Meat was "Home of moo, oink, splash, chirp & gobble."

I'm guessing the "150 years" refers to the family's history as meat cutters. Calumet Meat started in 1948, but its owner had been in the meat business before that. Although they used the characters in advertising earlier ("Calumet Meat, The Home of Moo and Oink") the company name was officially changed in 1977.
WBBM reported that one of the South Side aldermen is working to save the stores. I hope he can. It will be sad enough to see it pass out of family ownership.

I think Calumet Meat was around before 1948. As I mentioned above, ads from the 1970s say "Since 1935" or "Since 1939." Also, a Chicago Defender article from 1939 mentions Calumet Meat donated prizes for the newspaper's third annual cooking school.
Chicago will be a poorer place without Moo & Oink. Wave for catfish. Moo and oink. Scccream for ribs. Mooooo and oiiiink.

You'll be happy to know Best Chicago Meat Company (current owner of the Moo & Oink brand and, needless to say, unrelated to Best Kosher) has apparently rehired Gobble.
