Not sure why the Austin Weekly News is reporting this first and the Tribune article just references it and lacks many details of the original article.

    HI,

Tribune stated Moo and Oink is over 150 years old. Austin article indicates they have served the black community for 30 years. One of them is wrong, though I lean toward the Tribune as being mistaken.

How old is Moo and Oink?

I really hope that does not mean the end of their hot links, they are my 2nd favorite link around(Reams is tops for me).

It turns out that a case can be made for both claims. On their history page, they claim that their wholesale company is over 150 years old, but also talk about opening a retail store and establishing their mascots (Moo & Oink) in 1977.

    Hi,

I hope it is not too late to get a t-shirt. It probably is.

That history page seems to include some inaccuracies. Old ads for Calumet Meat (the precursor to Moo & Oink) say "Since 1935" or "Since 1939." I guess, as their website hints, there were even older precursors to Calumet. Also, the part about the mascots originating in 1977 is incorrect. Here's part of a Calumet Meat ad from 1975.

In earlier days Calumet Meat was "Home of moo, oink, splash, chirp & gobble."

If they hadn't fired those last three guys, they wouldn't be in their present predicament. Splash, chirp and gobble are hard workers and excellent marketers.

Looks like they were just beaten out of the market by better capitalized competitors with better pricing strategies. You always hate to see a locally owned enterprise fall victim to something like that.

I was really sad to hear this news.

You can find a history of Moo & Oink here.

I'm guessing the "150 years" refers to the family's history as meat cutters. Calumet Meat started in 1948, but its owner had been in the meat business before that. Although they used the characters in advertising earlier ("Calumet Meat, The Home of Moo and Oink") the company name was officially changed in 1977.

WBBM reported that one of the South Side aldermen is working to save the stores. I hope he can. It will be sad enough to see it pass out of family ownership.

I think Calumet Meat was around before 1948. As I mentioned above, ads from the 1970s say "Since 1935" or "Since 1939." Also, a Chicago Defender article from 1939 mentions Calumet Meat donated prizes for the newspaper's third annual cooking school.

Chicago will be a poorer place without Moo & Oink. Wave for catfish. Moo and oink. Scccream for ribs. Mooooo and oiiiink.

The articles don't seem to reference the Hazel Crest store. I just called and the employee I spoke with said that they haven't heard anything from management about their location.

The editor clearly is not a fan of Moo and Oink. Why would you let an article like that go out without answering the ultimate nagging question: WHERE CAN FOLKS GET SOME TURKEY HOT LINKS ON A REGULAR BASIS?

You'll be happy to know Best Chicago Meat Company (current owner of the Moo & Oink brand and, needless to say, unrelated to Best Kosher) has apparently rehired Gobble. I presume negotiations are still underway with Splash and Chirp.

Has anyone tried the current version of Moo & Oink's turkey hot links? They're endorsed by Gobble, no doubt.

I used to shop at Moo and Oink occasionally on my trips into Chicago.

How much did the expansion of Dominick's into the Southside lead to the liquidation of this chain???
