    LTH,

Thought I'd mention a couple of easy to miss you'll be happy you found them ethnic groceries with prepared foods, Dong AH and RC.

Dong AH has been mentioned a couple of times by Mr. T and Akane for their deliciously addictive Korean chicken wings, though Dong AH's skew more towards sweet then my benchmark Great Sea. In addition to grocery items Dong AH has prepared kimbap (Korean maki), seasoned tofu, mackerel, a few types of panchan, along with a rotating list, all freshly made and flavorful.

RC Oriental Outlet, like Dong AH, is a single storefront grocery with prepared food on offer, though unlike Dong AH RC has a dedicated prepared foods section including my Filipino neighbors favorite take-away vegetable egg roll, in the rear of the store.

These looked terrific, though I am unsure exactly what they are. It was necessary to purchase a tray of 6 so I (uncharacteristically) passed. In my behalf I was still full from breakfast at Patty's diner.

RC had a display of banana leaf wrapped items at the counter, Ube, Cassava and Suman Xntala. I'm not quite sure what Suman Xntala might be.

Dong AH and RC make a heck of a one-two punch for picking up a quick lunch or light evening meal. I should also note that a few blocks West on Touhy (3900 block) is another small strip mall containing NY Bagel and Baily, a Jewish deli, Filipino bakery with some prepared foods and a Korean take-away.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I think those are called Suman Antala. Suman are sweet rice cakes made with coconut milk and sugar.

These places look great. I drive by them all the time, but had no idea they sold prepared foods. Thanks for investigating them. I will definitely sample RC's Lechon Kawali soon. The near NW suburbs have such an amazing array of ethnic culinary gems to explore.

Another good resource on Touhy (but not as far west) is the Eastern Bakery, which makes excellent Lavosh.

    Dave,

Right you are, I thought the A an X, thanks.

I tried all three for breakfast this morning, the Ube (purple yam) was slightly sweet with a back taste of coconut. Of the other two one was ever so slightly sweet and hinted at banana the other faintly savory. All three went well with a cup of coffee for breakfast.

Thanks for the info on Eastern Bakery.

    Enjoy,

The unknown item in your post looks like a type of hashbrown/torta snack my mom used to make with potatoes, veggies, egg, spices that have been mixed together and pan fried like a potato pancake. (The actual name escapes me at the moment.) It's wonderful with vinegar seasoned with a little salt, black pepper, crushed garlic and sometimes a small thai chili pepper for an extra kick.

Also, when eating suman, try dipping it in some white granulated sugar for some added sweetness and/or dipping it your coffee. Yum!

    Foodie1,

Thanks for the info, and the vinegar dip sounds delicious. I'll be back to RC soon and see if I can find out the official name.

    Enjoy,

    Hi Gary,

Just confirmed it is called ukoy. My mom had some made for us when we visited her this past Sunday. You can make it in various ways using vegetables or shrimp (a fave of mine.)

Expanding your shopping options in the Lincolnwood/Skokie area, apparently a "giant asian supermarket" is opening up in place of the Cub Foods. A cashier working at the final days clued me in.

When I excitedly shreiked "H-Mart?" she just shrugged- but one can dream.

    FWIW.....
RC Oriental's pre-cooked Lumpia are now $40.00 for a Party Tray of 100 pc.
    and
they are closed for the 4th of July :( (Rules out my excellent idea for a "bring" to a BBQ/Block Party on The 4th)
