The Waffle House in Collinsville, IL, just off 55 outside St. Louis. Limp waffle, soggy hash browns that looked like they were a pre-formed frozen patty. I should have known something was wrong when I pulled in and the parking lot was empty, risk starvation or even Denny's before going here.

I went on a Saturday last spring. Parking lot was full. There was a wait. Crisp waffle & hashbrowns but no butter or maple syrup. Next time drive the 10 extra miles and go to Crown Candy in St. Louis. Totally worth passing on blech breafast foods for sundaes.

Amen to that. I've also had some of my worst Waffle House meals in the St. Louis area. Crown Candy has never disappointed, though.

Completely agree on Crown Candy and a shout out to their amazing BLT's. My frustration with Waffle House is the huge difference between different franchised restaurants. I've eaten at this one before and I'm never as happy with the one's in Missouri and Indiana as the ones further south, but this time the food was an abomination.

The fish and chips at Latinicity. It had great possibility as I watched them hand batter 3 small pieces of fish (they did not know the type) the order before mine. As I was waiting forever for them to get to my order, other line folk from other stations were coming in and taking over the fryer with empanadas, and two other unrecognizable foods to be fried. Meanwhile, as my order has not been started, a guest came to the counter to complain about the underdone and wet fish. The manager told her that that was the way it was supposed to be-something about 'moist' fish. Then, realizing that the customer should be right (since this is a new place) he took the fish back and said he would re- do it. By this time I wanted to bail, they did not start my fish yet, but due to the weird credit card system I did not want to leave the place without something. So I finally got my fish and it was wet, really wet on the inside. YUK! Interstingly some of my fellow co-workers left the place unimpressed as well.

I'd been craving Lao Sze Chuan for days, lost out on Saturday night when I'd suggested it... but got my way last night, after locking myself out of the house/in the garage while doing house chores and my wife was out getting her hair done. Anyway, after all the anticipation, we had our worst meal ever there... spring rolls were cold, beef with orange peel was cold & no spice, the three chile chicken had nary a pepper -- like literally one dried chile & about 6 tiny pieces of diced pepper. NO heat at all, and also greasy and heavy on the glaze. Only thing that was fine was the beef fried rice, and that was primarily ordered for my wife to take to work for lunch today. Has Lao Sze Chuan slipped, or did we just ht a bad night? And how often are the bad nights these days?

This was the original Chinatown location... around 6:30-7pm, so peak dinner hour. We were sat upstairs (after turning down table right inside door of main dining room because wife is super sensitive to cold) and were only people up there for most of the time, so couldn't see how other table's food looked, etc. But there were 2 waiters up there most of the night and they were super attentive. Wasn't like we were forgotten about or anything.

I ate there recently (around a month ago) and found everything to be as good as ever. I'd chalk it up to a one off bad experience...and the fact that you were seated in Siberia.

Sadly, now it's likely going to be years before I can drag my wife back down there... she's not the biggest fan of Chinese food to begin with (too much fried stuff), and this experience is likely to turn her off even more.

Sweet Black Pepper Bacon breakfast sandwich at Dunkin Donuts. The one I had was basically a smooshed croissant breakfast sandwich with sugar on it.

A ham from Aldi. I wanted to make split pea soup, so add to eat through a ham first. This thing is unbelievably fatty, I probably tripped half of the thing and theres still tons of fat on it.

An Oyster Rockefeller at The Shanty in Wadsworth. Definitely the nastiest oyster I've ever eaten. As it was going down, I was already regretting it. It tasted like the bottom of dirty fish tank (or how I imagine that would taste).

No, I didn't get sick, though I was worried about that, especially since I've gotten cholera in the past from a raw oyster. It just tasted horrible but it was cooked. All the bacon and spinach in the world couldn't mask that nastiness.

Was subjected to Real Urban BBQ carryout last night. If there's a worse BBQ place in the Chicago area I would be shocked. Its insulting to even call this place BBQ. Had the brisket, dry with no fat anywhere. No smoke flavor. Tasted more like grandma's passover brisket than a BBQ brisket.

Mac n Cheese was worse than Kraft dinner. Actually it may have been Kraft dinner. Beans were horrible. Sweet style sauce was way too sweet. Wife had the peach cobbler which was inedible, tasted like they forgot to add sugar and looked like it had been sitting out for days.

Not sure. It was either that one or the Vernon Hills one. Doesn't matter, they're all the same and equally offensive.

The key lime pie at Cochon Volant. Too tart to eat. It had no topping- i.e.fresh whipped cream to save it. KLP is one of my all time favorites and I will lick the plate clean everytime...but everyone that tasted it agreed. I asked the server if it was missing the topping and he said no. I told him that it was too tart and he said that is the way it was.

    AKA the 'meh' thread.

Several times I have gone to an enthusiastically received eatery for an exuberantly recommended dish and was extremely underwhelmed. Take the Longman & Eagle burger, for example. Please.

Anyway, yesterday I got out of work early and went to Publican Quality Meats. With the cold looming, I wanted some pork and some sausage to make bean soup with. I also ordered the THE BIG E sandwich:

wagyu brisket, horseradish cheddar, smoked onions, mustard and green leaf lettuce on a rye bun - $14

Not horrible, but far, far, far from good.

The rye bun was gummy and tasteless. The wagyu brisket was dry, chewy, and fairly tasteless. It had a leaf of lettuce!

The baggie the pickle quarter came in was rockin', though. It ziplocked at the top.

Seriously disappointing. Makes me less likely to get a sandwich there again.

sorry you didnt enjoy your sandwich: i havent had that particular one so can't comment. but i would recommend going back and ordering either the hot or cold charcuterie platters (best to order both, with 2-3 other people). they never fail to delight me.

It's true that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Postmates was running a free tacos promotion and I had a delivery credit to use. I could get someone to bring me tacos -- awesome! The deal was for two tacos so I opted for "beef" and "pork." There was little else in the description. The tacos were from Taco Burrito King on South Wells. The ground beef taco wasn't bad, but the pork taco was awful. I took two bites before I tossed it. I got what I paid for. ;-)

Fish and Chips at the Reel Club in Oakbrook. Billed as beer-battered, the skimpy and paper thin potion of fish was more chicken-fried and the chips were shoestrings fried to the point of burnt. I would have said something but my companion was enjoying her meal and I didn't want to spoil the mood. The cocktails were good and our waitress was very nice so I'll give it another try but I'm feeling a bit apprehensive...

The corned beef melt from Rose Garden in Elk Grove Village. There was precious little meat to this sammidge, and so little cheese I couldn't taste it. And the meat was oddly textured; a little slimy, like it was packaged pre-sliced and left sitting around too long. I know it's a diner, but c'mon. This is a staple.
