    Mother Lode Burger and side salad at Claim Company in Vernon Hills. Granted, we were at a private event so maybe it's better on a regular basis. However, my salad was so tired, it had probably been made 2 days ahead. I tried to order my burger medium rare but was told the only option was "cooked through." Needless to say, what arrived was a gray, dried-out puck that was damned near a choking hazard. How this place stays in business is beyond me. Burger King would have been better.

    I knew it was wrong when I did it, but I was working late, and it was right downstairs, basically. I knew it was wrong when I ordered it, but I needed to eat and all other options would take so much longer. So I got spaghetti and meatballs from Noodles & Company.

    It made me sad to eat it.

    Mmm, Noodles and Company. Went to the one in N'ville a few times, maybe a decade ago. I am not sure if I stopped going because of the hairball (probably not), or simply because I was eating something there one day and realized that if I closed my eyes I would not be able to tell which of their dishes it was. Not easy to make a global array of noodle dishes all taste the same, but they do. I used to know the original executive chef who designed their first menu. Sad story, and not simply because of his Fab Noodles association.

    My offering is Windy City Ribs on Cermak, formerly Rylon's. I have now tried this place once under each owner, and while it is a little better under the new owners (they also own La Cantina, an awful Mexican place on S Michigan) and they were very attentive to our pleasure, it is still awful. No smoke, rubbery ribs, dried out and tasteless brisket. On the plus side, the potato salad was not bad. They claim to have a smoke house (a real house, built on site) in back, and I could smell the smoke as I arrived so I believe there is wood being burnt somewhere in the neighborhood. Sadly it did not make it to the meat, or at least by the time the meat had been held in punishment for its crimes and then abused further while reheating, the smoke was long forgotten. I am curious about that smokehouse, but by the time I eat the awful food, I can't bring myself to ask to see the scene of the crime. If there is any place in Chicago in urgent need of Wiv's wise consultation, this is the place!

    With the new hotels and arena on Cermak, it will be interesting to see whether the passing, tourist trade will be enough to support a lousy BBQ restaurant on the south side. Me, I will go the extra couple of miles to Honey 1.

    Italian Chef Salad (salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato and pepperoncini on romaine with balsamic vinaigrette) at Corner Bakery. Don't fool yourself like I did that this might be edible.

    The turkey chili at Max & Benny's. Calling it chili is an insult to chili. Should just call it what it is....watery bowl of vegetable soup loaded to the brim with beans. Just awful.

    I blame Anton's Fruit Ranch for being closed this week and forcing me to venture out a bit.

    Cracked open a new bottle of the Costco EVOO. It is bitter we decided.

    Ruined our bread. This is the 1st time I experienced this with a bottle of this stuff.

    The beef brisket at Porkchop in the Promenade in Bolingbrook. It needed to be in the smoker/grill for a few more hours. Tough and lots of fat and gristle, not much smoke. And when the waitress asks if I'd like the appetizer before the entree, and I say yes, I expect things in that sequence. Table and floor needed a cleaning with hot soapy water, it wasn't like they were slammed at the time.

    Not that Famous Dave's is the best bbq in the land, but it's only a 5 minute walk away, and incomparably better. Buh-bye greasy floor!

    The inpatient food at Swedish Covenant. The worst was a orangeish cream of cornstarch concoction that was intended to be soup. There was a very strange tasting blueberry muffin and a truly awful fruit cocktail (not even as "good" as the canned fruit cocktail I had as a kid). Probably the best was cheese ravioli which was on the level of a bad frozen entree.

    As soon as I was sprung on Wednesday night I ordered delivery from Aroy.

    At Robust Coffee Lounge (63rd and Woodlawn), our party of four each ordered a completely different sounding sandwich. A Walter with turkey and bacon and avocado. A Turkey Harvest with cranberry mayo. A 63rd Street Club with "meunster" [sic]. A Marquette Club with cream cheese and ham.

    When the server came to the table, all four sandwiches were so identical that he could not tell them apart to deliver them, even after (to our chagrin) opening them on his tray. He returned to the kitchen. They couldn't tell them apart. We accepted them at random, thinking we'd trade to the right person after tasting them. Their tastes and appearances were indistinguishable. Bargain bin processed meats, characterless spreads, identical oppressively thick none-too-fresh indifferently toasted seeded ciabatta for no visual differentiation. Insipid coffee drinks. Without a doubt, the worst lunch in recent memory and definitely the worst business lunch period.

    This has been my experience with their EVOO the past couple years as well. Really hit and miss. Disappointing, because it used to be such a reliable product.

    Had this same problem with a bottle of the organic version a few months back. The two bottles of the regular purchased since have been fine.

    Tortas are still great at Xoco, but the huevos rancheros continue to be as mediocre as they were when I last ordered them several years ago. Eggs over easy were eggs over hard, but the yolk would not have added much to the watery tomato sauce in which the they were swimming, which neither the small, hard pair of tortillas nor tablespoon or two of refried beans could sop up. Perhaps if I had ordered the add-ons (chorizo and avocado), things would've improved but for the next couple of years I'll stick with the breakfast tortas.

    That picture is so many kinds of wrong one hardly knows where to begin, although the cookies do look like they might be good. From the stained carpet to the sign in the window for Caramel CAKE Latte. Hmmm, can you order the "Caramel cake latte, hold the cake?" It looks like they said "we need one of each" to pose for the picture, although it would be wonderful if the clientele is truly that diverse. The broken arm guy looks like he's just stumbled in after a hard night at the corner bar. I do wonder what the Asian woman is staring at so intently. So many people trying too hard to look hip. I just noticed that the couple that includes the stealth texting woman seem to be playing Scrabble.

    But, I'm pleased that this sort of place has a chance in that location. Times indeed change!

    Lunch at Maggiano's in Oakbrook. Just plain careless. Stuffed mushrooms and fried calamari both came to the table stone cold and the pasta that followed was a big clump of stuck together gummy noodles. It honestly all could have been leftover from last night.

    Shake Shack in Old Orchard. Finally got around to trying this place. Just awful at every turn. Burger tasted no different than Wendy's. Fries were on the same level as Culvers. Shakes had no flavor and were worse than McDonalds. Price, on the other hand, topped them all as 1 double burger, 1 fry, 1 hot dog and 2 shakes came in at $30!

    For a place that is honestly somewhere between Wendy's and Burger King in terms of quality.

    If have to fish the box out of the trash to find the brand, but worst thing lately was a shelf stable muttar paneer I got at Jewel as an emergency lunch. There was enough cheese, and the peas, though soft, had some pop, but boy was the sauce bland. Even with added onions, cilantro and serrano it reminded me of Chef Boyardee.

    I'm firmly on the "I don't get Shake Shack" train. I have friends who make a beeline for the closest one every time we're out and about and I can do nothing to deter them. Ordinary burgers, not good fries, overpriced shakes. All in an loud overcrowded environment. I guess there truly is a sucker born every minute.

    I had shake shack for the first time in Chicago this past weekend. It was okay. I wouldn't say it was bad... But it is extremely overpriced.

    That said, as a life long Chicagoan/ Midwesterner; I do have a bit of resentment that New Yorkers have embraced this rare culinary treat of hamburgers, hot dogs, and milk shakes; and now they see fit to introduce this rarified cuisine to the rest of the nation... at New York prices.

    I've seen glimpses of their reality tv show which, I believe, centers around the burger shops . . . and noticed an outpost in Vegas when I was there in March. Have never tried and doubt I ever will.

    Lox Benedict at Jasper's on Waukegan in Glenview. Overcooked poached eggs served atop grilled(?!) lox, served on a soggy english muffin.

    On the positive side, the slice of cantaloupe served as a garnish was dead ripe and delicious.

    Thanks for the heads up. We go here frequently from the office for lunch. I usually stick to the skillets, omelets, salads and club sandwich, which are consistently and reliably tasty -- and very generously portioned. I've never had any of the benedicts but I suspected they might be a dicey choice.
