For several years I have noticed an immensely popular van selling what I presume to be Mexican food on Washtenaw just north of Milwaukee Ave. It is right across the street fom Cafe Marianao. I know i've read something about it before but I've never stopped. Anybody know what they serve and if it's any good?

    Tom,

We stopped there during the Mil-WALK-ee adventure earlier this year. They have some nice tamales ; as I recall, we had pork and chicken. One of our group, a young guy by the name of Taylor who had not ever had a tamale before (!), thought them quite wonderful. I would definitely recommend stopping by.

anybody know what happened to their mothership in palmer sq. across from the church - that was one of my favorite mexican eating spots in the city, but they seem to have been absent from there for a little while

Whoa. Is this not a place to import something from RST or VI (or, to a much lesser extent, me) regarding The Maroon Van?

The Washtenaw van is the Maroon Van, though it is usually a silverish-blue van these days. I think some of the mystique of the van eroded when Walk-a-thoners found it just o.k. But that was one day.

The offerings are really pretty unusual, from the "basket tacos" of chicharones stretched with corn meal to the hot prune soup/drink, to the picadas.

I still think Marianao/Van is a powerful one-two Chicago street food punch.

Well, I had one excellent thing from the non-maroon van that day, even if other things were not. What was it, a flat thing with a pumpkinseed salsa on it.

That's a picada, a regional variation on the sope.
