Has anyone been to Alt Thai in Arlington Heights? We are planning on meeting some out of town guests this evening and don't want to have to travel into the city to go to Spoon or Sticky Rice.

Haven't eaten there yet, but there is also Bangkok Cafe on Vail St, just a couple blocks over. Alt Thai looks pretty cool inside but it exists in an old Panda Express.

Just moved my mom to a retirement home just a couple of miles from Alt Thai. Mom loves Pad Thai, so we had to try it.

Handsome interior. Friendly, efficient service. Mom had Pad Thai and I had Pad Kee Mao. Hard to judge a restaurant solely on two dishes, but both dishes were delicious -- so we'll be back.

To me this is one of those "fine if you're in the area" places. The service is pleasant, and they make an effort to put a creative spin on standard Thai dishes. The dish that I have liked the most is the crab fried rice, which is both topped with the blue crab and has a fairly generous amount mixed in the rice.
You just won't find the popping flavors of Aroy's or Rainbow's (for example) more authentic dishes here.

I've eaten at altThai several times over the years, and always enjoyed it.

Another place I've enjoyed numerous times near there is Salsa 17. Great variety of moles, etc.

Thanks. I'll check out Salsa 17. By which I mean I'll see if they have handicapped parking, as that is a key element in picking places to take mom (who is 89). :)

Salsa 17 is in the middle of a block in downtown Arlington Heights. They don't have their own parking - at least, not in front, but some such places have a few spaces in back that they might have available for special needs. On their block, there is street parking on both sides of the street; I don't know if any of the spaces are reserved for handicapped. If these options don't work, you can always double-park out front, bring in Mom, and then go park the car. (That's what I often do with my mom, who's older than yours.) If there are no spaces on their block, there's a huge parking garage just around the corner from them, on the west side of Vail just south of Campbell. It's free for up to three hours, and I'm pretty sure there are plenty of handicapped spaces on the ground floor. In fact, I don't have special needs but I think I've always found a space on the ground floor anyway (although there's probably an elevator in the garage). If you're going there for dinner, go early; once the dinner rush starts coming in, it can get pretty loud, which could be a problem for Mom. They have an excellent tres leches cake too. Enjoy!

Thanks. I don't know if mom could walk from the parking lot, but if double parking to let her out is viable, I don't mind walking. Appreciate the insight.
