Hi- I sing with the North Shore Choral Society. We are doing a concert at the Unitarian Church in Evanston this Saturday at 4:00pm, but we are performing the same concert at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica at 3121 W. Jackson Blvd on Sunday at 3:00 pm. Tickets are required for the Evanston concert, but the Chicago concert on Sunday is just a free will donation, and so no tickets required. The concert should get out around 5:00-5:30. Are there any decent restaurants to eat at in the West Garfield Park neighborhood that are less than $50, or would I have to go outside of that area? I did some searching online, and I did not see that many sit down restaurants I would want to go to. It was mostly fast food places. I have been to Garfield Park Conservatory a few times, but I have never been to the church, which is supposed to be fantastic. I am told they have a large parking lot adjacent to the church. Thanks, Nancy

Since you are on the westside you should taste the neighborhood. :)

Not a restaurant, but Mr. B's Old Fashioned Donuts is not too far away. It's the second location of the excellent Old Fashioned Donuts in Roseland.

In terms of restaurants, if you're willing to go up to Humboldt Park or down to west Pilsen/east Little Village, there's plenty of excellent and cheap Mexican food to be had.

That Basilica is an impressive building and seems like a wonderful acoustic as well; enjoy!
The best food is well-spiced and well-fattened.

A shadow of its former self.

Very small for the same price. :( Used to be as big as your head

They don’t have the pecan ones either. Ask for it and they sprinkled some stale and charged more.

I was gonna suggest the jerk taco place, which is not that far, but I turns out it's, was not that far, as according to their website, the location at Pulaski and Jackson is currently closed.

The smaller size didn’t bother me as the quality of the product didn’t match the original. Rather than the Roseland butter bomb, this was a dry, completely unexeptional, pastry.

Sunday dinner in that area is a tough ask. Another day of the week or breakfast/lunch, and you'd have a lot more options (Inspiration Kitchens, previously, is the one that stands out to me, if you were willing to do lunch- they do Sunday brunch and have pretty stellar execution). Ask this questions a few years ago and you would have had some west side institutions as options as well (Edna's/Ruby's, Wallace's Catfish Corner).

I have not been to either of these places, but you're willing to travel a mile or so west, there are two options that look intriguing. Info from comes from Facebook, because Yelp and Google are pretty silent on these places:

    Val's Kosher Kitchen:
They tout their "jerked everything" and according to their menu, do indeed serve kosher foods. Don't know what seating they have but are supposed to be open until 8 pm.

    Shirley's Kitchen:
Looks like some classic soul food options. Also, Mississippi hot tamales (presumably from the tamale man, Yoland) were on offer here, though there's no mention of them in the last 6 months on Facebook. Worth an investigation, for sure. Varying reports on their hours, probably best to call to confirm they would be open on a Sunday night.
