I have a short assignment in Glenview and of course will be taking advantage of the lunchtime dining in the area.

Besides a short stop an an unremarkable chain on Monday (Zoup! Excuse me but I love soup!) and after the food pop up canceled at the cafeteria today I needed some lunch.

Yesterday I did a search and this place popped up but I didn’t see a dedicated thread.

Place was busy with a short wait (10 minutes) for a table with 95% of the patrons of the Asian persuasion.

    5E9D64D8-598A-4E94-B35A-9C392AB3FD74.jpeg Soondubu Jjigae
with beef as the protein, spiciness set at regular and rice in a hot stone bowl as the starch.

I actually took a video of it boiling merrily away but couldn’t upload it here.

    1A5DF27E-6D06-47D0-8591-90163FB6B483.jpeg Banchan
Everything in this photo was complementary along with the meal

I actually enjoyed all the Banchan that came with it. Limiting it to 6 items allowed be to taste and enjoy them all without being overwhelmed.

Wasn't sure what the egg was about so I asked and he mentioned that it will be cooked in the hot stone soup bowl. Still not sure I cracked it into the soup and the cooked whites became indistinguishable from the tofu and the yoke eventually broke and became one with the broth.

The Jjigae was very good! Not really expecting it but should of figured but it was chock full of tofu (after all it was in the name of the restaurant) and I am traditionally not a big fan but here I enjoyed it very much! A few slices of beef and the hot stone bowl of rice allowed the edges to get crispy which also was very good!

At first I couldn’t taste the spice but as I worked my way down it became apparent. Not a lot and I will turn it up another notch when I visit again.

All told it will be two lunches for me, not bad at all. I am drooling a little bit at the thought about tomorrow. :)

I got a garlic cheese topping on the bread and that was the best part of the meal! They run the bread into the oven to toast it and brown it a bit.

    Dubu = Tofu
    SGD = So Gong Dong

If you're looking for something other than soup, the Kalbi is really good, and quite a large portion. Also, they serve some of the best panchan/banchan in town.

IMO - scratch Cho Jung from your short list. It’s gone downhill since the original owners left.

I’m the same strip mall is Ewa’s Pierogi. It was recently visited by the LTHNLG. Good stuff!

I like this place but I find the soondubu jiggae to be really weak here. In fact, in my many visits, I've yet to identify a main course that is anywhere above average. However, the banchan, pajeon and mandoo are all excellent.

As the person who nominated it for a GNR, I couldn't agree more. Unless it's made a dramatic turn-around in recent months, there's nothing to see here.

    HI,

Joong Boo Market was really great until they took away the panchan bar. I presume you will be there during lunch high tide, please report back on whether they have some panchan available.

I would still go, but the panchan bar was a nice touch.

Around the corner from SGD is North Branch, making very good burgers (try the house-made tots), and a pizza with a tenuous heritage to Gulliver's (the location was briefly a Gullivers, the new pizza is somewhat similar).

In the strip just south of SDG is Bonchon, Korean fried chicken, excellent.

Monica's is a killer Mexican place set back from Milwaukee just south of Palatine. Everything is good there, especially cecina tacos. Other Mex in the area that are pretty good include Los Huaraches on Milwaukee north of Lake, and Mi Restaurante at Wolf and Kensington. Mesa Urbana is between Lake and Los Huaraches, and is more of an upscale place. Food is good there, but pricey -- they're going for a Frontera Grill feel.

In the same strip as Mesa Urbana is Krua Thai -- mainly takeout, but food has been solid.

Talked with a coworker today and we are planning to get out on Friday the 28th from around 12:10 to 12:50. Standard lunch hour with padded travel time.

We thought close and fast were good. Also I love a good Huarache (they aren’t that common). :)

    Pleasantly surprised at...

    Los Huaraches
    3482 Milwaukee Ave, Northbrook

Of course I decided on their signature item...

    EEF50D03-DC23-4A65-B81A-C1724C36D741.jpeg Huarache

A plate filling oval piece of fried masa and I was surprised with a thin layer of refried beans inside the dough...

    A34B49C2-13EC-4AB9-A62C-7924DF0DBA88.jpeg

I went with my favorite chorizo and steak. The chorizo was just right, not too greasy nor spicy, The steak tender, maybe a little more browning. The star of this dish was the bottled red sauce! Man what a delicious kick. To be used sparingly.

Anyone who follows me will know I love soup. I will usually get a bowl but I know how most of these places work so I got a small and it was still plenty large. :)

Chips and salsa. Standard, chips nice and fresh, not thick, salsa, mild. Ask for the bottled stuff.

I’d go back but don’t think I’ll have the time. In and out in plenty of time.

Had a little time after lunch across the street so I stopped by H Mart to check out their lunch offerings.

No food court but some prepackaged items near the door to grab and go...

I’ve done this type of lunch before. Grab a few items, head back to work, put the microwave to work, enjoy.

Man doesn’t live on food alone. :)

    Une Année Brewery
    9082 W Golf Rd, Niles

With the enjoyment of the wealth of taprooms in my hometown of Oak Park I had to give the ones up here a try.

Very quiet when I stopped after work and the barkeep and I were able to have a nice conversation.

Tried their most popular Framboise, a raspberry sour (sours are their specialty. The other half of their split personality, Hubbard’s Cave, brews more traditional beers).

No growler fills, only bottles and cans to go.

Tomorrow (10-5) is Friday lunch out and from 12:10 to 12:50 I will be trying another place in the work hood...

    Siunik Armenian Grill
    1707 Chestnut Ave, Glenview

After researching Armenian cuisine they don't appear to have any authentic items on the menu but rather specialize in Mediterranean. Kabobs were mentioned to be popular in Armenia but...

    Maybe authentic marinades? :)

At least Himalayan Restaurant has one authentic Nepalese dish on the buffet.

Monday (10-8) beer stop (4:40 to around 5. Maybe later...)

    Macushla Brewing Co
    1516 E Lake Ave, Glenview

I hear Hackney's next door delivers so I might get a snack too.

Not planning to go out for lunch today but my cubical neighbor needed to go out.

He had a strong desire to go to the closest place that had tacos.
They have 4 1/2 stars on Yelp!
4 minutes later we were at...

    La Taquiza y Mas

Today was Thaco Thursday where their standard tacos are $1.25 down from $2.50. Their specialty tacos were still $3.00.

All in all I would rate them average. Steak was tender, cochina pibil was very good (not too sweet) but the standout was the $2.50 huge Tamale!

The tamale was not dried out and it had a lot of meat keeping the balance correct. If hungry I could see a pair filling the need.

The hot sauces were very good too. The addition of a habanero was a nice addition. Used sparingly (just drops) worked wonders. As always a nice topping on the cochina pibil as is the tradition.

Not a destination but you wouldn’t go wrong ordering the cochina pibil and tamales.

I live close to Siunik and have eaten there at least a half dozen times. As for proteins, I strongly prefer the lula kebob (ground beef) to the other options. We most recently got takeout from there last week and I'd forgotten how good the tabuleh is. Also, the cabbage salad is usually very fresh with a dressing that tends to be fairly acidic, which I like.

I doubt that lunch there will blow you away, but the owner is enthusiastic, food is made freshly and from scratch, and it's definitely worthy of a visit if you're in the area.

Hi- I was going to post about this a few weeks ago, but I never got around to it. The Chicago Trib. had an article on 8/30 about Macushla Brewing Company. I have hit my limit at the Chicago Tribune already. The place was opened up maybe a year ago by the son of one of the owner's of Hackney's who was a beer lover. He hired a friend of his who had brew making experience to brew the beer, and then the guy got another job, and taught the owner how to brew beer so he could take that job over. Unfortunately within days after this brew master quit, the owner suffered a heart attack and died. He had an enlarged heart which had gone undiagnosed, and so his wife had to take over the business. He was only in his 30's. They have a new brew master. This all happened in April. I am glad to see that they are still in business
