I was going to take my gf here for dinner tonight (haven't been), but didn't realize this. Is there anywhere to eat in the restaurant?

We went for dinner last night, and I loved everything we had, but the huitlacoche quesadilla was definitely the highlight. We also had the flor de calabaza quesadilla, which was definitely overshadowed by the huitlacoche. Of the three tacos we ordered (lengua, barbacoa and pollo), the lengua was my favorite. Definitely one of the best lenguas I've had. As stated by everyone, the tortillas were great. Only downside, is with guisado tacos, they get kind of messy.

Didn't see it posted earlier, but the donuts are unavailable on Sunday. Made a trip down for an apple fritter yesterday morning only to find that they aren't sold on Sundays.

Old Fashioned Donuts (the source of Authentaco's donuts and fritters) is closed on Sundays.

BTW, anyone know of a bar close by that allows outside food in? I really fear eating these tacos to go, because I suspect the tortillas (even though they're great) would get soggy and fall apart.

It's just over a mile from Bar Deville (701 N. Damen) and they do allow food.

I was there this past saturday with a friend (the huitlacoche quesadilla was incredible, by the way), and took the food to go. We ended up going to Emporium Arcade bar (1366 North Milwaukee Avenue) which, by gmaps is less than 1/2 mile away. If that place is too loud, there's also the Beachwood Inn (1415 North Wood Street), just a little bit further up the street and is much quieter.

I tried going last night after a painful loss to Wisconsin. Walked over from near Division/Damen because according to their hours, they were open until 10pm and it was only 8:45pm.

As I approached Ashland, I noticed that the lights were off.

When I got to the storefront, the entire place was dark, no lights inside or out. There was no sign on the front. And when I tried calling, I only got a busy signal.

All I really wanted was some lengua.

Btw, none of their social media presences mentioned closing early yesterday due to the weather.

We are remiss and apologize. Ran into unforseen issue during a minor remodel. Should have posted that we would be closed, but didn't. We'll keep you better informed in the future. The good news is that Fri we'll have comfortable seating. Triste.

I live a few blocks away and Authentaco has become by go to mexican place on Ashland.

The tortillas really steal the show. I got my usual steak quesadilla and lenguna taco which were both good as always.

I did just notice (of course after ordering) that they had some specials for the day that sounded appealing.

We're thinking of a small expansion which will allow us to add some menu items. Thinking about malts/milkshakes and griddled burgers and char dogs (possibly a Sonoran). Any other items you'd like to see? We've recently added tortas, and although the menu doesn't list them @ the moment, they're avail off menu. Chile Rellenos maybe?

Si!, but not the faux (though tasty) ones served at Dove's. Let's see some real authentic Rellenos. I'd be all over those.

If you fry them to order you may just be the only place in the city, in which case I heartily support that idea! If you go the cook and hold method, then forget it.

Huaraches, sopes, gorditas (in that order). Also not sure if there's a torta ahogada off menu, but that would be delicious, and think you could use the habanero salsa as a base for the sauce... (I haven't found a good one in the city - Xoco's is not good)

I love everything yall do, simple, real mexican food. However it becomes difficult to just come to yall more then once a week, when the menu is small (guess I really am a typical American eater).

This may be difficult, but how about a seafood/shrimp taco? I have not been able to find any good ones in the midwest :)

PS - Why burgers and shakes? This completely goes against the feel of the restaurant IMO. Anytime I see a place selling Mexican food + burgers/pastrami/etc... I immediately discount it.

Instead of shakes, I would expand the aguas frescas (there usually aren't many - if any - options in this area when I've been).

...other than the fact that the place is physically located in a classic art deco hamburger palace...

I like the idea. Call the shakes licuados or batidos; Sonoran dog elements on a burger sounds good.

Let me tell you why we're considering some additional menu items. In anticipation of getting our liquor license, give or take a few months- we bought a mobile kitchen trailer that we're installing in the back. A sweet cooking suite that's perfect for a few new menu items yet to be determined. There's a gangway on the s side of the bldg that you'd access it from, so, a separate entrance as well. Maybe even another name. This is where the food will be coming out of, and is why we're entertaining a few very focused ideas.

Thanks for your interest and conversation.
