Last time we were back in the Cincinnati/Covington area, we visited the Perkins on the Kentucky side of the river...and my junior prom date still worked there.

They are based in Minneapolis and are well disbursed throughout the Midwest but not in Chicago.

There used to be one in Champaign, near Market Place Mall. Not sure if that one's still there but according to Google, there seems to be one in Urbana on University Place. Perkins' web site is a no-go at the moment, so I can't provide more information.

There's a Perkins right off the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart (Exit 92). Also a Cracker Barrel, and probably a Bob Evans. We travel the road on our periodic road trips to Baltimore, and Exit 92 is emblazoned in our memory...

Perkins is the only chain restaurant in Cincinnati that served goetta.

Sounds like one hour is the required distance for a Perkins. There's one in Rockford on State Street a few blocks off the tollway, and one in Kenosha at Rt50 and 94.

We ate at the Ihop in Gurnee a couple weeks ago, but I avoided it for years after a dining companion had fried chicken that was severely undercooked. My wife reminded me Ihop is for breakfast and to avoid anything else. I feel it's quite a bit better than Denny's.

I also like Bob Evans more than Cracker Barrel. Bob Evans has the best biscuits and gravy anywhere IMO. Cracker Barrel stuff doesn't taste right, and the other 3 people in my family agree after several attempts. We like to eat there for dinner, however.

My favorite breakfast (non chain) is Juicy-O http://www.juicyo.com/ in Lombard at Butterfield & Finley Road. They have more stuff on the weekend, and well worth the trip. We also like Egg Harbor, which is almost as good as Juicy-O and has several locations.

It's been a few years since I've been in Bob Evans, but my recollection is that their stuff "doesn't taste right". I recall them serving margarine instead of butter (ewww), corn syrup instead of maple syrup (ewww ewww), frozen orange juice instead of fresh (ewww ewww ewww), etc. And when you start out using inferior ingredients, there's not much you can do to make stuff "taste right".

No latter-day discussion of IHOP is complete without some mention of their Horton Hears a Who tie-in offering, Who Cakes. Covered in two kinds of sugary glazes, candy-coated chocolate chips, topped off with a lollipop---just the thing for a hypoglycemic nephew.

Apparently someone needs to head south, the Stop & Go in Morrison, IL is infinately better than BE. And before the commercialization, the Loveless Cafe in Nashville, The Cookery, a huge number of basic restaurants put BE to shame. As to Perkins...used to always get their greasy (with onion and cheese) hashbrowns with a carafe of coffee to complete my Fri/Sat night in Davenport, and it made my weekend.

Yeah, I wind up eating B&G at Bob Evans at least once during the film fest I attend in restaurant-sparse Massillon, Ohio each year, and I'm always amazed that for a place named for sausage, the B&G are kind of bland, not much sausage or pepper flavor. Not terrible, but you could have better at least half the time selecting a diner at random.

That is, if you were in a place which, unlike Massillon, had diners to select.

    Mike,

I'd definitely recommend the Cameo Grill in Massillon. Not stellar food but it's very good and they do serve an outstanding breakfast. Easily beats Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans, IMO.

LOL . . . it's between Cleveland and the NFL Hall of Fame, hence the sidetrip.

I actually learned about it from Steven Shaw (aka Fat Guy), who runs eGullet. He visits friends there fairly regularly and suggested that we check it out.

    Hi,

A relatively rarely seen franchise is Grandy's, which features Southern food. There used to be two locations in Champaign-Urbana with one within a stones throw of Perkins. Another was just up the road from Lil'Porky's, which created a debate in the car about where to eat. If it was too early for lunch, then going to Grandy's was an easy choice.

Grandy's is my benchmark for biscuits and gravy with freshly baked biscuits, visible chunks of sausage in the granywith lots of pepper. If they make it like I recall, I am 100% certain JimInLoganSquare would approve. Grandy's also had chicken fried steaks, fried gizzards, fried chicken, fried okra and a pretty decent peach cobbler.

From checking their locations, they seem to have left Illinois entirely though they are in Indiana.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Cathy2,
There used to be a Grandy's in Des Plaines near Maine East HS. I had never been there, but always wondered what it was. I don't think it's there anymore, as there's no sign of it on the web.

Yes. There's a full sized one called a German Pancake. That's just too much dough for me, so I always order the Dutch Baby, which is the smaller version.

First there was Coke II/New Coke, now this American food tragedy!

IHOP — the International House of Pancakes — is changing its name to IHOb and will now feature burgers, the company said in a tweet that was not posted on April Fool's Day. It remains to be seen whether the change will be permanent or merely a flash in the pan (cake) to promote hamburgers.

"We're flippin' from pancakes, pancakes, pancakes to burgers, burgers, burgers," the company announced on Monday, announcing the shift that it teased by mentioning a looming name change last week.

I think the 'b' in IHOb is going to stand for bankruptcy!

IHOP was a niche business that most thought of as breakfast fair which they have very little competition on a national level. Now they are competing with the over saturated fast-casual burger segment is a bad idea in my opinion.

    Doubtful. ;)

Though, speaking of burgers, I had a great burger tonight. Simple, quick, inexpensive. Mariano's 80/20 ground beef, Martin's potato bun, salt/pepper pan fry to get a bit of crusty exterior. No pictures, pink juicy interior and I did not have to suppress an urge to pour IHOP blueberry pancake syrup on my burger.
