As long as the food is ok even if not exciting I will continue to go from time to time-- just to pretend that it is 1975, and that I am incredibly young and sexy, but adult enough to have fun, I have hair down to my behind, and the smell of dope lingers in the air at the streetcorner, (although not too near me as I am terribly allergic and my fantasy is not potent enough to take that away)! If you want decent brunch with some retro atmosphere you can go to the Sweet Maple on Taylor, but the atmosphere is not NEARLY as authentic. I suggest ordering something as 70s as possible-- preferably vegetarian, and buying cute little buttons with messages on the way out. Don't think food. Think time travel!

I love this post. It sums up my feelings about the Heartland as well. It's been about five years since I was there, but I always hearted the Heartland for all the reasons Dory said, and I'm sure I would again.

But it might be necessary to be this old in order to see the Heartland's charms. To want to be transported back to 1975, you'd have to have been in your twenties in 1975. I can understand why people who are younger might be immune to the spell.

No freakin' way. I was a college freshman out West in 1975, and I think the food/service/atmosphere at Heartland is simply awful. As I said elsewhere in here, this joint is a hellhole.

Well, just to be clear, I wasn't saying that if you were in your heyday in 1975, you will like the Heartland. I was saying that if you like the Heartland, it can only be because you were in your heyday in 1975.

Although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong about that, too. :)

I just recently moved to the area, too -- and I'm on the search for a scoop of ice cream or a milkshake.
Are there really no scoop shops near Loyola (20,000ish college kids and no ice cream)? Is there some place I may be missing?

I know there are options in other neighborhoods -- like George's in Andersonville -- but I'm wondering if there's something w/in walking distance of campus.

I have lived in RP for 16 years, and have always wondered why there are no ice cream shops in that area along Sheridan. You have tons of college kids, and a mile of beach, but no ice cream. Part of the problem is that the city health codes are pretty stringent for ice cream stores. Anyhow, the closest place I know of that serves milkshakes and such is the Deluxe Diner at Clark and Devon (a pretty long walk). Maybe there is something in between, that I am missing. Las Monarcas on Clark street is worth the trip.

The only thing I can think of is the Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts combo on Broadway just south of Devon.

Anybody have any recommendations for a place still serving dinner after 9pm? Open to anything except loud or fancy.

    Thanks!
