Me and the fiancee decided to cool off one hot evening with a soft serve ice cream cone from Mcdonald's so we took a drive up to the Mcdonald's across from Wrigley at Clark and Addison and when pulling into the drive thru I looked up and saw this giant egg with a crack down the side which was mounted on top of a pole in the parking lot like it was a sign or something one day. It had humpty dumpty kinda look to it but its all white with no writing on it. I have been to more games at Wrigley then I can remember and eaten my share of fries at the mentioned Mcdonald's and have never seen this egg until now. It must of been a sign from a previous restaurant or something of the such. Anyone have any ideas what it is or was?

On another note gotta say I love the Mcd's cones they are tasty and a great deal for less then a buck and a half. I think a shamrock shake flavor in a cone form would be a great desert. Does anyone know if Mcd's does any regional deserts like they do with some of their sandwiches.

I can confirm that they do indeed have regional deserts, and the Shamrock Shake is one of them.

I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and the Shamrock was only available for @ 1 month before and after St. Pats (at best)

But I have spent considerable time on Long Island NY, and they have this year round (or nearly so), but its called something like "McMint Twist" or some name. I have a friend I talk to nearly daily on Long Island and I asked if he gets Shamrock Shakes. In 50 years, he never heard of them. I described it, and he says its the mint selection on the menu year round.

So to answer the question, yes, McD's does not only cater to regional deserts and specials, but I'm sure this is done on a global basis to maximize sales.

I've not seen the egg at Clark & Addison, but a random aside on egg sculptures... Your query made me think of Jeff Koons' eggs, one of which is on display at the MCA right now. The MCA exhibit as a whole made me think of how horrific the explosion of a giant Kinder egg (or Happy Meal) might be, but the magenta (or pink?) egg at the center of it all--by itself--is worth a look.

I haven't seen the egg you are talking about, but my guess is it has something to do with all the McDonald's breakfast advertising billboards I have been seeing everywhere lately. All the little eggs dreaming of becoming egg mcmuffins and such. Breakfast seems to be a big part of their advertising push recently.

Get people in for breakfast and next thing you know, they're trying, and liking the new coffee(s). If McDonald's could only cook as well as they market.

It seems they advertise well enough they don't really need to improve their cooking; what they've got already is working out quite well for them.

Strangely I really like the greasy smell of walking passed a McDonalds (it reminds me of childhood dinners, which should tell you something about the cooking I grew up with), but I can't take the food anymore. I'd choose about any other food (fast and fried or other foods) I can think of over them.

The Egg McMuffin is quite possibly the best fast food item made. It is certainly a big step above any egg based sandwich I've had anywhere else.

I drove past today, looked but did not see a Giant Egg in the McD's parking lot. Is this some kind of yoke?

Regarding the best breakfast sandwich ever my vote is for the Mcd's sausage biscuit and egg. We were headed home from the bars one night and they were just turning over to breakfast. We were right on the fringe and i was dedicated to waiting until they started serving breakfast. The cab driver and everyone else involved was happy we timed it perfectly. What a great way to end the night. I would of been a fan of the all day breakfast they were considering.

I don't follow McDonald's closely and don't spend much time in Wrigleyville, but it seems like the area is prime real estate for grander advertising experiments. For example, I just read about the breakfast sundial billboard that went up two years ago.

The egg thing is bugging me. I called the McDonald's to ask for the story behind it, but no one answered, so I sent an email to the corporate office. I'll post if I get a reply. From Jamieson22's photo, the egg looks rather ominous to me, but maybe I've just spent too many years looking at Bruegel prints...

Ah, yes... Eggs abound in 15th and 16th-century Netherlandish art. With Bosch, I prefer the less monstrous eggs, my very favorite being the deattributed Concert in the Egg (ca. 1550).

It looks like we can at least agree that MCDonald's has the best breakfast sandwiches and is deserving of a giant (if menacing) egg.

My weakness there is the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit.

If only I lived closer to Patty's Diner, I'm about 2 hours away.

Patty's buns are house made, bacon crisp, scrambled eggs silky smooth, delicious barely describes the sandwich. On the other hand the morning nightmare of a McGriddle I had 3+ years ago, with it's artificial maple flavor impregnated bun, is a shudder worthy fast food flashback every time I drive past a McD's.

Taste before you judge................

I would prefer a Patty's ham, egg and cheese to any McD's sandwich whether I was on crack, weed, heroin, in an alcohol induced coma, meth, acid, ecstasy...you get the point. I had one today and its still the best breakfast sammy I have found.

Patty's was just an example. Just about any diner or Greek coffe shop will make you a sandwich like that for around the same price as a McNasty sandwich.

hey, just to get back to the giant floating egg over McD's . . . well, my son's Day Camp is on Waveland just east of there and in the last 3 weeks I have driven up and down Clark St. and in and out of Wrigleyville more than anyone should (that doesn't live there). So I saw the "egg" being installed via crane--my son in the back seat screamed "Mom! Look! A giant egg at McDonald's! Cool! Why is it there?" Me: "I do not know." Him: "How come you don't know?" Me: "Because I don't." Him: "It's so cool that there's a giant egg over McDonald's." Me: "But you don't like eggs." Him: "But I like McDonald's and I like that giant cool egg." Ahem. Anyhow, not to be a plot spoiler or anything but there is a yolk inside the egg (yes, it is meant to crack open, I believe when there are games on or big crowds or something it will do so and create a spectacle that makes marketing VPs tingle all over but not so sure how the peeps on the street will feel) and it has a message on it. I found the message somewhat underwhelming, but that is totally consistent with McDonald's in general. I won't tell you the message. Actually, I can't even remember the message. But it's in there, across the yellow moon of the yolk. And get this, it has something to do with eggs. Being served at McDonald's. In the morning. (Oh I am feeling so cynical. Sorry.)
