Bat 17 on Benson in downtown Evanston is modeled after Zingerman's. I can't vouch for their Reuben's quality (not a corned beef fan), but it fits the requested specs and you will not leave hungry. That's for damn sure.

The one in Logan Square at 2294 N Milwaukee?

    =R=

That's the one I frequent but I imagine all of their locations serve a good one.

If traveling north of the border, Mars Cheese Castle does a very decent rendition of the Rueben. Very decent.

LOL - they have a great one at Shapiro's in Indianapolis, too!

    =R=

Shapiro's is amazing! Everything they have there is much better than the same item at Manny's in Chicago. Really a shame that Indy has a better deli than us.

The true genius of Shapiro's is that they start you off in the buffet line with 10 feet of homemade cakes and pies. Obviously you throw one on your tray and then by the time you get to the end and that tray is loaded with corned beef/pastrami and potato pancakes it's too late to have second thoughs on the desert.

yea it's ok and sometimes if you are very lucky you can actually get it within 45 minutes of ordering it.

We stopped going to Mars for lunch on our trips up to our place in Wisconsin because of the ridiculous wait times to get a sandwich made. Also the $25 upcharge for a case of Spotted Cow was incredibly offensive.

I learned many moons ago that Woodman's in Kenosha is the best place to buy beers limited to Wisconsin.

Whenever someone mentions the Cheese Castle for New Glarus, I immediately ask them if they know about Woodman's. The Cheese Castle has pretty much EVERYTHING New Glarus offers, but the prices...I can't. Just can't.

And Bobby Nelsons just down the frontage road from Mars has plenty of tasty cheese...and oh that Summer Sausage! Still cash only I believe.

The Vienna Beef Factory Store, located at 2501 N Damen Ave makes an excellent reuben. Also available on plain or seeded rye bread. https://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/a ... s-a-reuben

I tried the Reuben at Cozy Corner on Harlem this afternoon. I can only award it a rating of Fair. It didn't hold together while eating, maybe the bread was too thin? The meat was a little spongy and the sauerkraut scant. I'm usually a sauce on the side kind of guy but I found myself wishing the thousand island was grilled-in instead of served cold in a condiment cup.

What really struck me about the place was how many people were working there. I'm not exaggerating with an estimate of 25 in uniform. Business seemed good.
