Mario's had peach this afternoon; I grabbed a small on the way to class. No more delicious way to spend a dollar in the city.

I lived near the Sacramento Miko's for a year and stopped by every now and then, but I just swung past the Damen Miko's to refresh my memory with a large watermelon and lemon. Good, strong, real watermelon and lemon flavors and not to sweet. That said, Mario's is a vastly better value, despite being less dense -- Miko's large ran me $4 and is slightly smaller than a $2.25 medium at Mario's.

After three years of trying, I finally managed to arrive at Mario's when they actually had peach.

    It's pretty good.

Looks like we just missed you!

Monday night was my first Mario's peach experience too...it was excellent! My wife & I split a large, which was just enough to last us from Mario's to our garage.

Next time, hopefully we won't have two Al's Italian beefs slowly soaking their way through a paper sack and will be able to hang out outside Mario's & enjoy our treats the proper way.

REB and I just had our first Mario's peach experience (as the second leg of the always-delicious Al's/Mario's Daily Double). I'd call it very good. Despite the under-ripe peach chunks, it might even have lived up to its massive LTH hype.

I was there last pm and must admit that after having 3 stellar peach ices in as many days, it was off. Under ripe fruit was crunchy, bland and did not leach flavor into the surrounding ice in the way we know it should. I'm sure it's only temporary and will be rectified. Haven't seen Skip around much lately either.

There's only another 10 days left for the Mario's season. Closing a bit early this yr (staffing probs I've been told). The 13th is it.

I think the better part of peach season is behind us. That could have something to do with it, too.

Funny, I had my first peach yesterday and felt the same way. Kind of bland with the occasional, faint peach flavor. I still enjoyed it, though.

Yep, last night was definitely a disappointment on the Mario's peach front. The first really disappointing batch I've had this season. Hopefully tonight's is an improvement.

Well, after three days in a row of peach lemonade where there were thick chunks of peach with the texture of granny smith apples (ugh), I think I might be ending my mario's peach spree. Maybe cantaloupe tomorrow.

I too had 3 shots of Peach in 4 days at Mario's.. I think my first day was a couple before yours, though (and the last 2 days were probably the same as yours :-) The first day was completely outstanding, one of the best ices of the season - ripe, sweet, soft chunks of peach. The next 2 experiences (2 days later and 3 days later) were like yours above - harder thicker and more unripe chunks of peach. I too think the best peach-days are probably now behind us, unfortunately - am glad I had that one outstanding experience this year, though.

FWIW, I went with Watermelon-peach the last couple times - and the watermelon *was* outstanding the last couple tries.

I was there Labor Day afternoon. If that wasn't the height of peachiness, all I can say is it was scrumptious. Loads of peach pieces, all ripe, all deeply flavorful. I think they must be using Red Haven peaches or some similar variety, because the color was ruddy, almost crimson.

Does Mario's open on May 1st? Somewhere I read that they open in May, but it didn't specifically say. If the weather's nice, it will be a perfect treat after the roller derby game next Saturday.

    Hi,

Yes, it opens May 1st. The last two years, I have speculatively passed by the night before to find it open.

Yesterday afternoon (4/30) the joint was jumping. Biggest surprise of the day as per Maria... orange. Been going here for 45 yrs and never had it. Skip is an artist @ the height of his powers. All flavors in harmony sweet and strong. The chef in me revels. Smash hit home run out of the box.

Yeah, I had my first ever Mario's the other day after our Lao Sze Chuan lunch and I tried the orange too. The bright orange color looked a little food-colory and threw me off but a closer look revealed little specks of zest and the slight bitterness was really just enough against the mild sweetness and the big citrusy flavor. I was very pleased with it and I have to get down there and try the tutti frutti next.

Please, it depends on the day. About 12 days ago, the peach was wonderful, fruit soft and succulent; about 5 days ago, good, not so wonderful (my server suggested I try the watermelon then; perhaps I should've listened, altho I certainly have no regrets.)
